Sean Sherk/Hermes Franca/UFC - Steroids

I enjoy watching UFC, i watch all of the PPV's and every ultimate fighter episode. I'm yet to get into other organizations but i don't really have the time for that.

But anyway, I've only just recently started to read inside news stories on MMA and i have to say i was extremely disappointed when i read a story the other day about Sean Sherk testing positive to Nandrolone following his successful title defence against Hermes Franca at UFC 73. Not only this, Franca also tested positive himself for steroids.

After reading this, my first reaction was extremely pissed off because not only was i looking forward to a future fight between himself and BJ Penn but i also looked up to Sherk as a role model as far as hard work and training goes and it was only a few weeks ago i posted up his training video, which i recommended members on this forum to watch if they needed some inspiration to train. Or, if you weren't after training motive, just to watch an extremely awesome workout.

I'm also disappointed with Franca, who claims that he used steroids in hopes of healing up an injured ankle. He also stated that if he hadn't taken this fight that he wouldn't have been able to pay the bills. Well, quite simply it's his own fault for not knowing how to save his money. Obviously, i don't know the exact amount that Franca makes/appearance, but i'd imagine he'd make enough money to live at the very least.

Nonetheless, both of these men have been given a 365 day ban from fighting (i believe this includes all organisations, i could be wrong though), and, obviously, Sherk has been stripped of his title. I think BJ said it perfectly in an interview following this saga when he said "And to all of you people out there using steroids, f uck you guys!"...Couldn't have said it better myself....

Stream.

He tested positive for deca. There have been quite a few fighters busted for using deca for the purpose of healing their joints. I wouldn't be surprised if they tested all of them right now if half of them didn't come up positive for nandrolone.

I wish they did not test for drugs in sports. I really do not understand why people make a big deal out of it. It is a tool in the tool box, but does not determine winners and losers.

We've already had the steroid debate (a couple times).

Regardless of opinions on drug regulations, it's always disappointing to see someone you look up to let you down. The fact is, they broke the rules, and that's upsetting. They cheated (and yes, breaking the rules to give yourself an advantage is cheating), and that sucks.

Yeah, I'm sure a majority of top fighters are users. It sucks when you have to accept cheating just to maintain a competitive edge.

I'm additionally dissapointed because I had assumed that these guys were tested and that what they made of themselves was capable through non-altering methods.

I guess I was conveniently ignoring the signs such as the huge jaws and whatnot...

I feel the same way.
