Scientology. Religion or therapy?

I’ve spoken to a few scientologists and I have respect for what they do. However there are many things I don’t understand.

I believe that scientology is more like a therapy than a religion. The idea is that you speak openly and honestly about all things, you never lie, you never hide your emotion. People think that what they do is very strange but to me its just therapy.

Like when you have had a very open and honest conversation with a friend and you have got something very important off your chest, you feel better and more relaxed.

But then that could swing back round and you could say the same about all religions.

I'm interested in seeing what people have to say about this and what your views are on Scientology.

I am completely anti-religion, personally.

I know that in the US its a big thing but personally I believe that Religion is the sole cause of 99% of the problems on earth.

Not A religion in particular, but religion in general.

Interesting, thanks Sara.

Chris. You do have a point. I cant say I agree, but there are a hec of a lot of bad things that happen because of religion. However, If religions comunicated better I think that it may even help.

I do not follow any religion, but I know a lot of ppl who are and really respect it.

I agree. I am the same exact way, but on the opposite side. I don't have a religion, and don't readilly buy what religions tell me. People automatically think I'm going to pull a Karl Marx or something.

I also believe that having complete faith in science, technology, and anti-religious ideals is a religion in itself.

I just dont believe its physically possible for something like "God" to really exist. (I say "God" as this covers all others, such as Allah and so forth!)

I'm highly scientific in my background (through education and work) and this has its aid to my belief, but I just don't believe any of it.

I'm not saying those who do are wrong! Just it would take something huge to convince me that there is an almighty being that exists, and can control our every thoughts etc.

It just seems too unlikely to me.

I don't respect Scientology at all, it's a cult that's killed people in the name of "healing".

Bro - That could be just a bad part of it. Thats just like saying "Islam is bad cos they are all terrorists", which is not true.
There may be good part of scientology to.

There are no good parts in Scientology... You have to understand though, that we also don't know 'a lot' about Scientology; a good chunk of what they do is never revealed to the public.

Here are my views on any kind of faith:
1) believe in what you want to believe in.
2) let nobody tell you what to believe in.
3) hurt anybody because of what you believe in, expect to get hurt because of what you believe in.

True, but only if 80%, hell, even 50%+ of Islam was like that. Sure, Scientology may have some merit, but nothing to create a religion over, and definately not enough to treat sick people with.

Chris, what if everything you think to be true is false? Scientific evidence has shown us that most of our tangible universe doesn't exist most of the time. Atoms phase in and out erratically, the electrons that make up the atoms are wildly unstable, even the nucleus -- the neutrons and protons of all atoms have a statistical probability of non-existance. Most of the time, they simply aren't there. And yet, here we all are. Some would call that statistical probability that we are here, God.

Interesting point.
Mind numbingling complex.
but interesting.

So Lei. Would you agree that you feel Scientology could be classes as a "therapy" and a way to make some ppl feel better and relieve stress?

They do have a whole bunch of weird stuff going on deep down. But I think the communication part of it is a damn FINE idea.

They do that "therapy" because the founder of the religion was questioned about his methods by therapists. He denounced psychology and forbade the followers seek help when they need it. He makes up for this with the therapy by unlicensed untrained elders. Several scientologists have committed murder or suicide after not being given treatment after showing blunt sign of serious mental instability.

And as far as the statistical probability of atoms not existing, many scientists believe that the atoms are just moving in a determined pattern at a very high rate of speed (10^23 m/s), so they appear to be missing sometimes when in fact they are all just rearranged, the mass is constant therefore they are still present within the given volume.

Religion was always used to explain the unexplainable in every culture around the world. The problem is that less and less is unexplained but there will always be questions and therefore always religions……and wars.

Don’t forget about the aliens that are using us to take over the planet for the scientologists, who are apparently made up of aliens. How do they get people to sign up with a story like that?

That would make sense, but both of these are just assumptions. We just don't have the methods to observe how atoms move. Sure the atoms are there, they ought to be there within the given volume. But it's an issue of probability again, that some interpret in various ways.

But, I don't really know what I'm talking about. The lecture that gave me this idea was Davinder Singh on Reality and Existance.

Good stuff guys but here is what is missing from the story for me...

Thats my point. Its so crazy yet ppl still sign up. Not all of them are 'stupid', they must be able to think 'no, thats crazy' they believe it. WHY WHY WHY!

Ive seen this brain washing thing happen. Its pretty scary to watch and it looks really creepy what they do.

Guy1 was asking guy2 'do birds fly?'
guy 2 would always have to reply, but he could say anything he wanted.
then guy1 would keep asking the question again in exactly the same way, with no expression, change of tone or anything.
in the end Guy 2 was shouting and screaming in his face, calling him names talking about his sexuality and his mother, and both! and guy 1 didnt even flincth.

Then all of a sudden they both burst out laughing.

Tho it looked creepy there was a point to it...
Always keep your cool, never let the other person know your pissed off.

I just found this really interesting.

They are not stupid, just gulible. The thing that I find so intreseting is the secrecy, always be wary of secrecy. Its like magic, if everyone knew the truth there would be no show.

Remember a few years ago when the comet was comming by and all of those people drank the poisoned kool-aid because they thought there was a spaceship full of aliens behind the comet that was comming to take over the planet?

I change my mind, maybe they are stupid!

Lol, remember, for every scam, there is a fool.

Another reason people keep joining is beacuse it's being endorsed by celebrities and whatnot. People are friggin stupid.

If everything I think to be true is false, then I guess I'm wrong ;) About it really.

I don't believe in religion because there is no proof behind any of it - I mean theres physical proof that I'm here now for example, however some gook saying he's been spoken to by God in his dream gets carted off to the nut house for a reason, imo.
