Sport Schools meal plans are terrible...

Ok, my school serves this:

Pizza

Some sort of disgusting generic everyother day changing frozen preservatives crap

Sub Sandwiches (which I always eat)

Salads (they only give out like 5 of them to a school of 1200 people)

Burgers

Then, the meal line that changes daily. Like...rice bowls (gross), philly cheese steak (made from the gum on the floor), or some other disgusting thing.

Everyone is complaining about how the American kids are over weight...well DO something about it, change the friggin menu.

Ive always thought the same thing n Im not even living in the US....it's DISTURBING lol really..no wonder the kids' habits r what they are.. my cuz that lives there only eats when she gets home cuz the food is so disgusting

I think something should be done, seriously..this is prolly the cheapest food but in Portugal decent meals are served with soup, fruit and an average main course..it can't be that hard

Alot of people don't have the time to make ourselves something.

Grr, a few more months before I am done with high school...

You better enjoy high school!!! Let me tell you, it doens't get easier!! Anyways, college food isn't better at all... And I don't have a lot of time either, I cook a few lbs of chicken at a time and put it in the fridge, and take it with me whenever I'm in a rush.. I do the samething with stirfry..

Well, despite the work I have always been told that college is better.

Food in college and highschool were horrible but definitely worse in high-school. It is disturbing. College food I experienced had plenty of choices and some of them were healthy.

In highschool there was no such thing as a healthy hot meal. One of my highschools sponsored a sub-way but aside from not being convinced sub-way is gold, it was one of the few sponsorship programs there are (and if I remember correctly that "subway" station only had cold junk).

Your highschool sounds like the typical crap mine served (and all probably do) except both highschools I went to served french fries with just about every hot meal.

Today you here a lot of talk about getting rid of vendin machines in schools to promote healthier diets for children... morons should start by fixing the crap they serve for lunch before worrying about the handful of kids that use the vending machines.

yeah, the reason people even buy from the vending machines is because they dont want to eat the crap that is served. And the vending machines are optional when luch is'nt so i dont know why they care so much about the vending machines.

Guys, why is food horrible in school?

They have to make it cheap!

The state says the school has to offer meals, they don't require them to be restaurant quality. All they have to do is OFFER something to you thats quasi-nutritional, then they can sell whatever they need to to offset the cost of the days food bill. Schools are way underfunded anyway, they can't "waste" money on food that is going to taste good AND be good for you. Like alot said, pack your lunch. Use a foreman grill, grill up some chicken breast, take a little bit of italian dressing, thats good, portable and quick.

Schools don't like paying for anything they don't want to. I'm a high school umpire, I know. I can't tell you how many times our association has had to threaten schools to stop supplying them with officials because they won't pay us.

My mommy makes me a nice sandwhich every single day. She also chops some fruit up for in between class as a snack, and packs me 500ml of milk. I love her. :D

I think you are fed by the same company that cooked for my school. It sucks but you are on the right track with the sandwich lines. As I recall almost every day breakfast is a cinimon roll with sugarry cerial or maby some pizza or corn dogs. I don't even know why this is legal.

I agree with aevans. I worked in a public school district as a tech specialist for two years and was good friends with the Cafeteria manager. Serving food to thousands of kids within a certain period of time WHILE staying within their limited budget (caf labor, supplies, ingredients etc.) is a logistical nightmare. There are nutritional requirements set by the state (calories, fat, nutrients etc...) but they are not the correct calories, types of fat. Unless you are on a free / reduced lunch payment system, bring your lunch. If you are, pick out what IS healthy from the meals and leave the rest behind. And lay into the salad bar if available. Lots of salad bars have eggs available, which is a great source of protein. If you start doing that, it will become a habit.

What is worse is I think these schools teach a whole generation that this is how you are supposed to eat. I certainly did not feel like I was doing anything wrong when I was younger and I grabbed nachos every day- putting on a scoop of beans and a scoop of beef and an extra scoop of nacho cheeze. I can't even imagine that anymore.

Now, I know a lot of people who are my age and I don't think any of them have any idea how to feed themselves. Most people are still stuck on the food pyramid. That pyramid was dismissed thirty years ago.
In my state there is a major program in place that demands healthier habits for kids. What this means is that pop machines are only turned on durring lunch and (I am not making this up I swear) for every pop choice offered the pop company must offer 1 healthy alternitive all of which are water. That is the big plan to make kids healthier. breakfast/Lunch is unchanged.
