Sata Interface Q

I recently acquired a bunch of Sata2 cables (the ones that have the locking mechanism), and they're being shipped now. Now I'm curious, is there a difference between the Sata interfaces on the mobo? Or are they backwards compatible?

Basically you are saying you have a SATA I capable mother board that this connected to a SATA 1 Hard drive, and you have SATA II cables being shipped, and want to know if these cables will work with the SATA I hard drive?

I ask why would you want to do this, when:

SATA I Hard Drive:

Transfers data at up to 150 Mbytes per second (1.5Gbits/second)

SATA II Hard Drive:

Transfers at up to 300 Mbytes per second (3.0Gbits/second)

And, if the cables are changed, the transfer rate will stay the same?

There will be no difference in transfer rate.

The "primary" difference between SATA I and SATA II, is the transfer speed (as approximated above).

Some of the cable wire (not the end connections) come flat and some come round, but inside they are the same, and are generally backward compatable.

In other words you can connect a SATA II cable to a SATA I HD and MB. Some external SATA II drives come with locking mechanisms. Additionally, though the end piece are the same, the plastic shape (or angle of) the end piece can some times be different, but generally shouldn't cause problems.

I've personally got a 300gb/s HDD and a phenom mobo (assuming 300gb/s). This is just about wondering for future builds.

That's cool.

The cables should be fine.

You're welcome.
