Sam's Journal

Yay, my first entry ever in any journal. So today is the day that i officially decided to really lose weight. i've tried counting calories but that just drives me crazy because i get tempted to starve myself and i know that's never any good. my resolution is this intuitive eating strategy, but it's hard. i'm the kind of person that always feels like i want to snack on something so i'll eat even when i'm not hungry. and it's been even worse recently since i've been coming home to mom's cooking like every other week, so it's even harder to resist eating. gaahhh! i love my mom too - she'll tell me that i've gained weight and then proceed to offer me some tiramisu. oh well...leaving for college again on sunday so no temptations then.

breakfast: nothing - didn't wake up early enough to eat a meal at "breakfast" time
lunch: mom's special noodles
snack: tiramisu (couldn't resist)
dinner: noodles
dessert: tiramisu

okay so i will do better this weekend. need to exercise too...

Hey ya know.. snacking actually isn't a bad thing to do. From what I understand, it will keep you from getting that extreme hungry feeling and will keep your sugar at a good lvl.. or something like that lol. :p

Anywho.. I know whatcha mean about wanting to snack even though you're not hungry. My bf and I are the exact same way.
I've been controlling those snackattacks since I restarted this "diet"... but it's hard.

Just gotta make sure if ya do snack.. keep the calories low heh. Those 100calorie snack packs are awesome! lol

Anywho!

I'm still pretty new here but everyone just seems so awesome.. and I'm sure you're gonna see that as well.

Keep at it and you'll reach your goal! :D

Hi there and welcome. Congrats on starting your weight loss journey you've come to the right place, everyone here is really supportive and helpful. Every body is different in they way they eat and therefore need to diet. One of my friends was telling me the other day that the experts are now saying that you should eat something small every 3hrs to consently stimulate your metablism, not sure if its true or not, but if you like to snack then maybe its the go for you. Work out your caleries for the day and split it up so your eating a small meal constantly through out the day. That way you might feel like your still haveing your snacks.
As for your mum, I have one just like it. Spends an hour lecturing me on how important it is I stick to a diet and lose weight then with out even pausing for a breath offers me a peice a cake, when I say no thanks, she adds "oh one peice wont hurt" lol We should really film them one day and play it back I am sure they have no idea, what there doing.
Good luck with your diet I am sure you will do well.

Thanks for the encouragement, now I am soooo pumped and ready to start losing some weight, yeah! Today was a day full of baby steps...instead of tiramisu i had two WHOLE GRAIN chocolate chip cookies (who knew they made these...) and i had a chicken burrito instead of beef and i only ate half of it, maybe because i ate some chips and salsa while waiting for the burrito. and for snacks i've discovered raisins and pinenuts...weird combination but tastes fantastic.

i think i will succeed more with the many small meals a day plan, so the snacking thing is under control. i think my problem is that even when i start eating the little meals/snacks every 3 hours or so, i still eat the same amount at "regular" meals, so i end up consuming more calories. tricky tricky...

Hi and welcome to the forum!! Just found your journal and wanted to send you a hello. I just read something recently about the intuitive diet, and I really found it interesting. It really seems to make sense too. I think kids have it natrually, and somewhere along the line we lose the ability to intuitively eat. I know when I watch my kids, doesn't matter what they are eating...even pizza or cookies...when they are full they just stop eating...even if there is still a cookie left, or a little bit of pizza. They aren't tempted to keep eating like I am. Wish I was able to do that more.

Anyway, I really look forward to reading your journal, and hearing how you like the intuitive diet. Hope you enjoy the forum here. I can't express how much support and encouragement I have received here. I know you will too. Good luck with your weight loss efforts!! Keep us updated! :)

Welcome welcome :D

You are doing just great. Keep it up. Baby steps is the way to go. Glad to hear you had chicken instead of beef and you only ate half. That's good girl, You have got this down. I also heard thatsnacking all day is goos for you. It keeps you from eating large meals. And when I started to lose weight I never went on a diet, I ate whatever I want just less of it and instead of red meats, I had turkey or chicken, Intead of the good icecreams I had sugar free- fatfree fudge bars or jello's. Just substitute your foods. And allow yourself to have that whole plate of pasta once in a while.
Okay I see that I'm going on and on................. have a good one and stay POSITIVE

fluff - funny thing is as a kid i don't think i ever really learned the whole intuitive dieting thing, which is probably why i'm paying for it now, lol. always time to learn new things i guess

jelly - thanks for the advice. it's good to know that it really is possible to lose weight without going on a strict diet. i think my problem before was i didn't want to wait several months to lose the weight when i knew that i could cut so far back on calories to lose the weight in several weeks. now i know patience really is a virtue :)

so today even though i promised myself i would go on the elliptical, i got into this zone of studying and homework that i didn't want to leave, so i don't feel TOO bad about not exercising  . tomorrow, definitely. food wise, i had turkey chili for lunch, some pretzels as a snack, and a turkey sub with mustard instead of mayo for dinner. definitely proud of myself because that sub is REALLY good with mayo. has anyone tried the whole not-eating-after-a-certain-time strategy? i wonder if it really works...

Hi, you know I think that intuitive eating thing gets draged out of us by our parents lol. You know that whole your not leaving this table untill every last bite is eaten. I know I am guilty of doing it to my kids in the past. Its that whole wasting food is bad thing so we learn to keep eating past the point of being satisfied. Its a whole new thing we need to learn and constantly be teaching our selves that we can stop when we have had enough. You know I dont think its necsary to be on a strick diet, its all about lifestyle changes and making the good food choices over the bad. I think its a lot easier that way and has a lot longer lasting results. Your off to a great start keep up your good work.

HAPPY SPRING DAY!!!!!!

Great job on the foods choices from yesterday :D *two thumbs up*As for the not eating after 7pm, I have done it I sometimes still do. I eat dinner about 4:30 -5:30 and then I have a snack around 7 pm. After that I am good. But hey, life throws you tons of balls, big and small :D And you eat when you gotta eat. Know what I mean. It really depends on your life stlye. All I know is don't over eeat right before bed time. We all have done it and it's a very uncomfortable. But for a week try to stop eating by 8pm and the next try 7pm. Then eventually you will get the hang of it.

Well, have a good one and keep up the great attitude

I have to agree with Zoila on the intuitive eating thing. I also grew up in a home where I had to clean my plate at every meal, and I do think it screws up our ability to decide when to stop eating. I dont have that rule for my kids, and I am hoping that will help them to keep that ability to eat when they are hungry and stop eating when they are full. Sounds so simple, doesn't it? lol. Then why do I have such a hard time with it??

I have never really implemented the not eating after 7 thing, but I think it is probably a good strategy. I know I often have moments of weakness after dinner (esp. on the weekends when everyone is up much later) and it takes so much more effort to stay away from bad foods. Maybe just having a rule of not eating after 7 would help me with that. I have heard that dinner really should be the lightest meal of the day though, since we don't need the calories just to sleep.

Great job on getting on with that excercising!! Keep up the great work! :)

Hi! Just stopping in to welcome you and glad to see you working so hard and all! before long those baby steps will be BIG MAN steps!LOL:p

lol i grew up with the same kind of parents. they said they were just so happy that i was healthy that they wanted me to eat as much as i could (i don't understand the logic, but hey...) and then they kinda figured things out with my brother because he is as skinny as a twig now.

fluff - its true, i read an article where the reporter lived in france for a year or so and adjusted to french eating habits (lunch being the heavy meal and dinner being light) and lost 15 lbs just from that, all the while eating quiche and chocolate!! if only it was that easy...let's just move to france

thanks to everyone to who put in their two cents about not eating too late - it seems like it's worth a try so starting today i've stopped eating after 8 pm. ::fingers crossed:: hope it helps.

breakfast: woke up too late to eat
lunch: salad :D
dinner: light chili

woot woot, i feel good about the food. now i'm off to go for a little walk :)

Hello!! Hope ya like it here, sounds like your off to a great start, and I'm looking forward to getting to know ya better :)

ahhhh i can't stop thinking about food...its almost 11 pm and i stopped eating at 7. even though i'm not really hungry, but i don't have that full feeling and my brain just won't let me forget about it, even while i'm studying. ::sigh:: but i'm sticking to it, and i haven't let myself cheat yet :D i just want to say thanks to everyone here, being a part of this forum REALLY does help!

breakfast: eggs and graham crackers
lunch: healthy chicken stir-fry
snack: pretzels
dinner: chili

it's hard to focus on losing weight this week because i have two exams, so my goal next week is to really buckle down and start exercising and eating more small healthy meals.

has anyone else noticed that when you start eating less, there's this period of a few days where it seems like you're always hungry and your stomach can't stop growling, but then all of the sudden your appetite adjusts? mine definitely did that recently, so now all i have to do is just be that much more aware of when i'm actually hungry and when i'm not. i feel better already...went to publix today and bought a whole bunch of healthy food - granola, oatmeal, apples, and veggies - i'm so excited about this eating healthy. and i'm sooo proud of myself today because my friends and i went out to olive garden and i managed order something not too bad for you (shrimp primavera) and i was full after soup so i barely ate any of the pasta. on top of that, i managed to refrain from drinking tonight, which is definitely a plus :D

Its funny, because I have days where I can stay within my calories and it is so easy. Then I have other days when I cant stop thinking about food, and what I can eat next. I am not even sure what makes me feel one way or the other.

I have found it easier over time though to choose better foods. Like you said about going to Olive Garden...there was a time when I could never make a good choice at a restraunt. It was just too much temptation. Now I find it much easier (Chinese food not included. lol.).

I think its just something I will struggle with to some extent my whole life. But coming here and reading everyones posts really helps me stay motivated.

Keep up the great work! Hope your exams went well! :)

Thats really awsome that you come to all those realizations, thats half the battle being able to listen to our bodies and know when we are really hungry or just bored, lonely or something else. Definitily someing I am learning as I go on as well. I still have a couple of restaurants that I have to stay far away from because I just cant trust my self yet. So you should feel really proud that you manage to go to yours and make a good choice meal wise, its really great. Looks like you've got your self on the right track. Well done.

Thanks guys! but i have a confession to make...so i did really well over the week, then saturday hit. it was my birthday so my friends wanted to do all these nice things - they baked brownies for me, made me dinner, and bought me some drinks, so i couldn't say no to any of it! i mean, i guess it wasn't as bad as usual because i only had one piece of brownie and one drink. i guess in these situations you have to allow yourself to go wild a wee bit  mmm chocolate...

Well it was your birthday. I always think its ok a bit on your birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY by the way. Hope you had a great day. Just start a fresh tommorow and you will be fine.
