Weight-Loss Salad Shockers

Weight-Loss
From today's Hungry Girl Mailer

A Chili's Nightmare...
Next time you're at Chili's, don't think you're doing yourself any favors by ordering a Chicken Caesar. That nasty excuse for a salad squeezes in 1,010 calories and 76 grams of fat. And that's without the crackers. You'd be better off with the Guiltless Grill Chicken Platter. It's more filling, and it has a more reasonable 580 calories and 9 grams of fat. Replace the rice with some salad greens to save around 200 calories!

Applebee's Alert!!!!
Craving steak at the 'Bees? You'd be a fool to request their Steakhouse Salad. They're pretty hush-hush about the nutritional details of this salad, but their last stab at a steak salad, the Grilled Steak Caesar, had 1,191 ridiculous calories and over 75 grams of fat. Yikes! Instead of a steak salad, grab yourself an order of Teriyaki Steak and Shrimp Skewers. Those tasty sticks only have 370 calories and 7 grams of fat. Not bad! BTW, if you really want a salad there, go for the Grilled Shrimp Skewer Salad. Even if you have the dressing, you'll take in only 210 calories and 2 grams of fat.

Costco'll Cost Ya...
Feeling faint at Costco? Don't scarf down a Chicken Caesar there. That thing contains 756 calories and an alarming 61 grams of fat. Holy moly! Even their BBQ pork sandwich has only 306 calories and 9.5 grams of fat. Your best bet might be to grab yourself a serving of their nonfat vanilla frozen yogurt. That stuff is fat-free and only has about 24 calories per ounce. A small serving of that should keep you satisfied long enough to finish your shopping and head home for a sensible meal.

Mexican Madness!
Check out the alarming stats on these taco salad fiascos (stats include all the fixins')

Taco Bell Fiesta Taco Salad w/Spicy Avocado Ranch Dressing - 860 calories, 46g fat

Wendy's Garden Sensations, Southwest Taco Salad w/Ancho Chipotle Ranch Dressing - 700 calories, 41g fat

Steak 'n Shake Chicken Taco Salad w/Buttermilk Ranch Reduced Calorie Dressing - 1,073 calories, 70g fat

On The Border Grande Beef Taco Salad, w/Ranch Dressing - 1,670 calories, 125g fat (EEEEKS!)

**HG Tip: If you NEED a taco salad, stick with chicken and avoid tortilla bowls, tortilla strips, guacamole, sour cream and cheese. And substitute salsa for dressing!

HG NIGHTMARE...RUN SCREAMING FROM THESE SALADS!!!!
If you happen to live in California, Nevada or Arizona (or plan to visit there soon) and find yourself at an Islands restaurant, avoid the Kaanapali Kobb salad if it's the last thing you ever do. That monstrosity has 1,520 calories and 116 grams of fat! Their China Coast salad has 1,130 calories and 73 grams of fat! Their Wiqui Waqui BBQ Chicken Salad seems like a calorie bargain at just 960 and 53 grams of fat (um, just kidding). Are we the only ones who think salad stats like these should be illegal?

Salad-y Standouts!
We like these. Just remember to read dressing packets carefully...

McDonald's Asian Salad With Grilled Chicken, no dressing - 290 calories, 10g fat

Denny's Fit Fare Turkey Breast Salad, no dressing - 248 calories, 8g fat

Subway Grilled Chicken Breast & Baby Spinach, no dressing or croutons - 140 calories, 3g fat

Burger King Tendergrill Chicken Garden Salad, no dressing or croutons - 240 calories, 9g fat

Who knew a salad could be so bad...

Holy Moly is RIGHT!! Who knew you could get that much fat into a salad for Pete's sake!! Thanks for posting this Mal. I've actually had that Taco salad at Wendy's...but NEVER again I tell ya, NEVER again!!

For us, it's increasingly difficult to find anything sensible to eat at a fast-food or big franchise restaurant. Here are two that we look for when we're out on the road.

Subway salads can be reasonable-because you get to stipulate exactly what you want on one and can load it up with spinach and veggies and skip the cheese, fatty meats and awful dressings. Their grilled chicken seems to be reasonably lean.
Another place we find we can eat out without breaking the calorie bank is at many chinese carryouts you can ask for "just steamed vegetables and chicken (or bean curd if you prefer the vegitarian route)". If you're lucky they'll steam the chicken as well. You can sometimes find this on the "special diet menu" section of menus. Just be sure to fight off the rice and cookies they'll try to get you to take. This can be challenging with the language barrier sometimes, but most of the time you can get what you want. Some soy sauce and chopsticks and you're set.

oooh, chinese can be dangerous...very very dangerous. Just look up a calorie count on general tso's chicken and you'll see what I mean.
I don't eat at fast food joints, not only do we not have a single one on our beautiful island but I avoid them at all costs when I travel. I have a fast food free body, and my four year old son has never eaten fast food in his life. no wonder he's so skinny...
If I have a salad I usually get something with more veggies then meat or cheese. And I avoid regular dressings like the plague... I ask for olive oil and vinigarette or I just get a slice of lemon or two and squeeze that on. you just never know what your getting at a restaurant when you order something that is supposed to be heart healthy or low calorie/fat, sometimes its worse then fried food.

that only works if you honestly LIKE steamed veggies and chicken... to me - it's incredibly boring and i wouldn't enjoy it at all... Low fat doesn't have to be low flavor- steaming the veggies is just bland and no flavor...

this is the biggest problem i see with a lot of restaurants and their "diet" menus... they're boring... When I go ot to dinner, I don't want boring.. Iw ant flavor... When I lived in NYC.. the take out chinese place near my apartment would make me some of their dishes (I never liked fried foods so those were always out) without the oil - if i asked... saves a ton of calories and you don't sacrafice any flavor.

A local restaurant to me, has about 1/2 dozen features on his menu that are low fat/low cal- FULL flavor because people asked for it - steamed fish in parchment is nice once in a while but the low fat curry he makes is to die for...as is the blue cheese stuffed fig with balsamic reduction. (I go to dinner there and i don't feel deprived... If I ate steamed veggies I'd feel deprived. More restaurants need to do what my local place did... ask their patrons what they really want..

I'm in shock it we have a lot of people on this forum that don't know this already. If you don't know this, You better be doing your home work because you have a LOT TO CATCH UP ON.

Yea, that really surprised me too.

I was at walmart last week and was going to pick up a salad there, when I saw it was like 500 or so cals. What the heck?? you know? what do they put in those things?? lol

That's very true. Everyone's different. For instance we happen to find a lot of flavor in different veggies. We didn't at first, but gained appreciation of them. I guess it's an acquired taste. And while we don't often eat out (we usually carry a big cooler of food wherever we go), we do occasionally end up stuck someplace where we have to pick something up. For us it's a treat! When we really want to celebrate we get or make a little sushi.

I started looking at the Nutritional Information on fast food foods when I joined this forum. I was absolutely amazed with salads. I cannot eat salad without some type of dressing. Which of course raises the calories and fat considerably. Now I put the dressing on the side and dip my salad into the dressing. Low and behold.... I usually have over half of it left with just one packet of dressing. Before I would squeeze two whole packets into my salad before eating it. :(

Salads themselves aren't bad as far as the rabbit food goes. I think it's the stuff we dump on it to make it taste less like a raw veggie. Most lettuces and cabbages are really low and it seems you could starve to death trying to live off of them. I think the big deal is the cheeses and meats and that super thick yummie dressings we dump on them. Most restaurants will have a small side or dinner salad that sometimes isn't even on the menu but what they do have are the Cobb salads and pecancrusted something or other that taste great but you really don't want to look at the numbers...

(by the way it's pronounced pea-con, a pea-can is something found on construction sites lol...)

I make my own dressings. And try to keep with fresh veggies. I usually get salads when I eat out too. Eeep.

I can't do a salad without dressing either.

I also can't live without fast food. Everybody talks about making a "lifestyle change" rather than just going on a diet, and any lifestyle change i try that includes no fast food is destined to fail.

So, I printed myself out a nutritional guide to the fast food places, and starred the food that is best from each restaurant. I keep it in the car and can look up stats as I go. This way, I end up at Arby's with a Beef 'n' Cheddar sandwich for 440 calories before the Jack in the Box Ultimate Cheeseburger at 1010 calories.

The Wendys salad isn't that bad as long as you don't eat the salsa , sour cream or the chips (those are most of the calories) so that leaves Lettuce cheddar chili onion and tomotoes for 360 calories - I know they have a few low fat dressings but my um work has cut me off from their website today so I can't check :)
