Safe to drink an Energy Drink (caffeine)?

Is it safe to drink an energy drink (Redbull and Monster) before your run?

How about in the middle of the run? <--Need to know this for the upcoming marathon race.

Hi there,
I would be careful with the redbull or similar drinks and I am talking from my own experience with this during my first marathon.
Coke would be probably better and some recomend it after first half of the marathon. Remember coffein causes dehydration and it may be difficult for you when running.
When I ran my first marathon I had one redbull prior the race, one during the race + some of the energy gel with coffein and when the race was over it was diarrhea that troubled me more then my sore legs:)

I think I can handle the diarrhea problem. ;)
Coke (or an energy drink) would be safe if you drink additional water, right?

BTW, what was your time on your first marathon?

Hi,

well maybe you can handle diarrhea but your legs will be sore like never in you life and trust me it is not fun to sit down, get up.... all the time;)

my running time was not the greatest but I was glad to finish because I did not train for many reasons tha last 4months prior the marathon. But it is awsome just to finish. Now when I am thinking about another one I know what to expect and finaly will listen to the advices I did not before :) I am always kind of smart ass:)

coffein can be your help and also your enemy. Hard to say. May be you should use it when training your long runs you know. That way you know the reaction of your stomach:cool:

Could I get some tip/advice from you since you are experienced?

Goal for my first run: Finish at whatever time. :)

1) What is the latest time that you need to finish the marathon to receive a certificate? (I've emailed LA marathon in case).

2) Is it a good idea to run 3 miles and fast walk, run 3 miles, fast walk, and continue with this routine throughout?

Well I am not an expert but why not:)

1) I do not know in what latest time you have to finish to receive a certificate. I guess you have to check with the LA marathon organisators. In case of Hunington Beach marathon everyone who finished recieved a medal.

2) Well I think that you have enough time to train and you will find your optimum pace and if you train than you will be able to run the whole 26,2miles. you do not need to start fast - you need to preserve your power for the last 8 miles or so.There is a very good book about running and it might help you. I do not know the name but i can check it for you and let you know.

how often do you train??

Hi sarka, yes, please tell me the title of the book.

I run 4 to 5 times a week, ranging from 2 to 5 miles each.
I still haven't attempted to run a 10 mile in one practice.
