Safe and realistic amount of weight to loose over a fortnightly period?

Hey all,

I'm in the progress of out laying my goals, and as easy it would would be to put that in 4 weeks I'd have lost the 40kgs I want to get rid of, but...well no. Haha

So i'm curious to know what is a safe, and realistic amount of weight to loose over a two week period. I've put on my spreadsheet between 1.5 - 2kgs. Is that too much? Or can I aim for more? Keeping in mind I don't want to harm myself by doing so.

Opinions?

I'm no professional, so I'm just going to tell you what my doctor told me and it's actually working for me. You should lose 0.5 - 1 kg per week. I'm losing 0.5 (2 kgs per month) and it's working great 'cause I don't starve myself and the weight comes out slowly but steady and even when I stopped dieting (for like 5 months) i didn't gain anything back.

When you first start exercising, you're gonna lose weight from sweat, depletion of glycogen (which are really heavy "energy" molecules in your body, used for "quick" energy metabolism) and that from fat.

Weight loss from sweat is pretty standard, and you can lose several pounds in a day doing this.

Weight loss from Glycogen is quick as well. at 4.1kcals per gram, they burn quick, and since they are hydrophilic, they take a lot of water down with them.

Weight loss from fat is the slowest of these 3. at 9.3kcals per gram, they essentially require twice as much effort to deplete as glycogen. Because they are hydrophobic (do not link up with water molecules), when they burn, the weight you lose does not get combined with some additional water weight as is the case with glycogen

Glycogen and water will fluctuate tremendously, whereas fat will not (especially if you start exercising regularly, as your body becomes more efficient at energy metabolism) so expect your weight to fluctuate tremendously throughout the week, particularly after large meals or "binge" days.

Hope this helps
