Running..

Running properly does work your abs to an extent as you will have better posture and naturally tighten your abs for power from your core. Can you use running in place of ab/core work? no.

Your abs and erector spinae stabilize you as you do most, if not all, of the things you do daily. While you run, your abs keep your body from flailing around/wobbling. Say you're doing tricep pull downs with your back on the pad. Your abs/lower back keep your body straight. Try doing tricep pulldowns after a ridiculous amount of crunches and you'll feel what I'm talking about.

Just as the previous posters said, it will not substitute an abdominal workout by any means. As it is called, your "core" (abs and lower back) stabilize your body. It is vital to keep them strong.

It really depends on how you are running. For instance, if you are doing a "jog", then your ab and lower back muscles are most likely not taxed enough for you to forgo those ab exercises.

However, work a HIIT workout into your training and I bet your core will feel very sore the next day (as well as the rest of your body).

I don't do ab exercises that much anymore but substitute uphill sprints and interval workouts in place of it. The result has been I can actually do more crunches faster as well as more advanced ab exercises that I couldn't do before.

I would love some input on this...
