running then recumbent - HAMSTRING!!!

Last Wednesday, I had some time so I ran 5k on the treadmill. I felt pretty good so I thought I'd spend a bit of time on the stationary bike. About a minute in my right hamstring kind of cramped up. I reduced the tension and rode my 20 minutes. My hamstring was sore until Saturday. Every time I'd stay seated for a while and get up, i could just feel the tightness. I guess I'm wondering first, what do you think I did, and second, how do I prevent this from happening again? I'm trying to do little bricks like that to hopefully get prepared for a sprint triathlon sometime later in the year. But, if I keep getting hurt then it's not gonna happen. So, what's up with all this?

My first suggestion, Greg, is to use an upright bike, rather than a recumbent stationary bike. Based on hig angles and other stuff that I am not knowledgeable in, your riding pattern stresses different muscles differently. It may be that a stationary bike places a greater stress on hamstrings.

Second, it may be that your hamstrings just aren't up to par yet. They should improve with time and effort, but you need to lay off to let them heal until then.

Thanks G8R. I snuck in a short run last night, probably a mile and a half or so. Afterwards my other HAMMY was a little tight. It's not sore at all today. I've never had hamstring issues before and can't think of anything I've done that's different from my usual routine. It's just kind of mind boggling to me. But, there is an upright bike in the gym too. I'll hop on it next time and see how things turn out. I appreciate it, Greg
