Running The Mile

Hey,

I am not sure what topic this should go in, running or this, but I decided this.

My goal: To run it in 6:59.

Information: I am a 7th grader. I am 5'4'', 96 pounds. I play a lot of tennis and basketball. Today was the first time I ran the mile and got cramps. My best current time is 7:27.

Your help: Please give me tips on how I should improve my mile and how to get rid of cramps.

Thanks,
Jedi

to get rid of cramps, try some gatorade & a bananna before running, & no sodium! and in order to run a mile quicker you should just keep running!! and that will improve your cardiovascular system, and quicken your mile

Thanks. It's weird, I have never gotten craps before since about 5th grade. Any special exercises I should do or drills to improve my mile?

the best one i've found is just running more, not only the mile, but run several miles, and natrually the longer you are able to run, the lower you mile time will go, although your sprint speed will not be altered

Thanks. Also, do you think I should lift weights? Or am I to young? I currently lift 6 pound weights for 15 minutes every other day. Is that good? Should I increase it? Thanks.

how old are you?

and a healthy diet would benefit your running ability also (not diet as in eating less, but generally more healthy, no candy, no pop, etc)

Try interval runs. Goto a high school track and sprint around it once, then jog around it, repeat this until you can't do anymore.

Before you do this, do a nice warm-up by walking around the track once and cooldown afterwards by doing the same thing. Also, remember to stretch when you are done. Stretches should hit all of your leg muscles and core muscles. You should hold them for ~20 seconds each stretch.

Every other time you go to the high school track, run up the bleachers and walk down them over and over again also.

Always warm-up and cooldown properly.

Do what MR said, "gatorade, banana, and keep running!"

Good luck,
Rip

For interval training you could also walk a lap, and then jog two, or something like that. Alternating sprinting and jogging with nothing in between might be a bit too much, especially after your very first mile run.

When, I use to run my secret before races or big events was to stretch. A LOT. I'd normally stretch my legs for 30 mins at least to maybe 45 mins... After I stretched my muscles were so open and ready to work. It worked for me but, maybe you could try it...

before football: 7:21
3 months of football: 5:15

Sports are good, and so is just running. The running/jogging stuff = A+ good stuff.

Static stretching for 30-45 minutes is over-stretching and not a good idea.
