Running success!

Hey, this isn't STRICTLY weight-loss, although I started running to lose weight. As you will read from past threads, as I approached a body I was relatively happy with, I needed to find another way to stay motivated besides weight loss. I decided to work on getting a better time for my 5K and started a training program. After a couple weeks, I sort of just switched up the program I'd been trying and focused generally on pushing myself faster by working out 4 times per week in this combo: 5K as fast as I can, easy jogging 5K, sprints over 30 minutes (not sprinting the whole time, obvs!) and increasingly long runs. Today I ran 5.15 miles, which is the longest I've ever run.

I'm pretty happy because yesterday I broke 28 minutes for the first time at 3miles, and today I did the 5.15 miles in 51 minutes flat!

This brings up an interesting point I have noticed, which I corroborated with my uncle-in-law, who is a big runner. I wonder if anybody else has experience where it's actually harder to go faster at a shorter distance than a longer one? I'm not humblebragging AT ALL, since NEITHER of my times are particularly impressive on the grand scale. I'm not particularly frustrated, either, just wondering if any runners out there have advice on how to get better at pacing myself so I can improve my shorter distances?

Thanks!

hmm interesting points. Have you tried running 1k before hand to warm up... many people don't warm up before a 5k and spend the 1st k out of the 5k to officially warm up?

what kind of training plan were you doing, have you tried doing any speed work? for example, speeding between lamp posts?

And brag all you want, you trained hard for that time... so what if it's not a record breaker, its YOUR record breaker...you deserve it!

Running is my favorite cardio exercise. It is not an art or tough technique. It is easy and useful exercise. It burns fats of body quickly.Running increases stamina and improves breathing process. It increases heart functions and reduce chances of diseases.

aw, thanks. Y'know, I haven't really warmed up, so that's a good point. Fortunately, there's a great loop in my local park that's a decent bike/jog away, so that could be a great warmup, esp while the weather gets colder. now that I'm back in school, I have their gym where it's easier to practice speed training around the indoor track, so I will focus on that as well.

I have a cousin who runs a lot and set lifting for the legs doesn't help speed/stamina, but I find that hard to believe. Any thoughts?
