i'm not a runner and never really have been. i'm 30 yrs. old, small 5'4, 105 lbs, but it seems i can't run too long because i start to breathe heavily. i usually walk on my treadmill at 2.7-3.0 speed, i try to run but it's hard. how do i train myself so that i can be a runner or at least a jogger??? usually do this on my treadmill rather than outdoors. any suggestions??

also, i'm not trying to lose weight at all. actually i really just need to tone up. i'm what i call a skinny fat person. lol! i used to workout 3-5 days per week until my father passed away 1 1/2 yrs ago and then moving in w/my fiance i got really lazy and lost most of my muscle tone that i had achieved. i'm really upset about it and i'm trying to get myself back to where i was before.

thanks,
Lillian

Listen, I am in the same boat. I never was a runner and never liked running due to breathing issues. I wasnt diagnosed with asthma, but hmm whatever.

Anyways, you gotta start slow. Walking long and faster each week. Once that becomes easy to walk 45 mins fast, you can start the jogging process and then onto a little run. without running for months or years your lungs endurance is pretty much depleted. Do this to gain more endurance.

PS: ASk your fiance to go with ya! It will be more enjoyable dont you think! Motivation is key to success.

thanks tglpgm! i thought something was wrong w/me....lol! i don't have asthma either, so i couldn't figure it out. i can only jog for like a few minutes then i have to stop. i guess i'll have to work it up a little here and there. i didn't realize how hard it was to get started. yikes! makes me feel so out of shape. thanks for the advice. i greatly appreciate it. i doubt my fiance would go w/me. he has a hard labor job, so he's beat when he gets home...lol! me....i sit at a desk all day and can't wait to get off my ass....lol!

I'm in the same place as you! Or I was. I started about 6 months ago walking on the treadmill. I kept upping the speed until I was walking at 3.5-4.0 mph. Then I started doing faster speeds to jog for as long as I could and recovering at 3.5-4.0 mph. Finally I feel like I'm seeing enough progress to attempt a 5K soon. I can maintain 5mph for an entire mile, with a very short recovery time. Converting treadmill to outdoors is a whole other story. I have no way to measure how fast I'm going, so I tend to go way too fast and burn myself out soon. I'm getting better at that as well. It is an amazing feeling, accomplishing something that I never thought I could do. Because I would get short of breath so soon, I just decided I wasn't meant to run.

thanks, i'll have to learn or push myself to up the speeds occassionally. thanks for you advice!! much appreciated!:)

Hi, I thought I would add my experiences also. I started running 4 months ago. I do have asthma so I didnt think I could ever do it. But I started out running slow for 3 minutes and walking for 3 minutes. I did that for 20 minutes and then thats all I could do. I just kept doing more and more until I went for 45 minutes and them I started uping my running by a minute, running 4 minutes and walking 3. I just slowly progressed and now 4 months later I have gotten so much better. My longest run was 9 miles with running 15 minutes and walking 1 minute. It takes me about 1 hour and 53 min. I have completed one 5K without walking. Next month I am signed up for a
10k. It's amazing what we can do if we don't give up. Oh ,plus I wiegh 187 pounds. Which makes it harder to run. The key is never give up and take it slow and steady. I started out weighing 203 lb. I suggest reading, Galloway's Book On Running 2nd edition
Good Luck.....

Hey April

Hey, how's your asthma now? Do you really need your inhaler often or have your lungs gotten to where you dont get attacks or what? Let me know !

Lillian, You can do it girl! And your husband might be beat, but that dont mean he cant run or walk with you! No excuses to not spend time with someone you love, ya know.

Jeesh, only 30 more days til I have to go to Basic Training, trying to run fast in a short time for 2 miles getting ahrd and worrying me. Good luck

I have attacks still when Im around cats and some dogs. But as for running I take it once before I run and I can go for the whole run even 3 hours of running for my 11 mile run. I am scared to not take it before I run. I forgot about a month ago and I made it through a 6 mile run but it was a little uncomfortable. So I just take it everytime before I run. But I will start being brave and not take it before a short run just to see. I always take it with me in case. Its funny, I forgot to bring it one run because I had been running so good I forgot I needed it. lol ....
