running problem!!

I am only 3 weeks away from taking a fitness test to join an occupation which i have strived to do all of my life! my problem? It all started several years ago when i joined the territorial army. i was taken on a run which was completely unexpected and unprepared for and at the end of it i threw up every where!!! This then happened every time i went running. I am a petty fit person who goes to the gym 4-5 times a week, i use all of the equipment no problem, but when it comes to the dreaded treadmill i start running and after about 500meters i start to feel extremely breathless and that good old nausia starts its work!! I was wondering if anybody had any ideas to help me, maybe some breathing techniques which might help me to take in more oxygen!!

Are you waiting after you eat.

You could go to your GP, explain the symptoms and ask for a lung function test.

There are several yoga techniques which can help to improve your breathing - try a local class and see if you like it.

Are you over-pacing yourself? Perhaps you're starting off too quickly and need to take a few minutes to walk, gently jog, speed it up a bit etc....

From a chiropractic perspective, the nerves that go to your diaphragm come out at the upper/mid neck; it may be worth going and seeing if you have a neck problem (or elsewhere) which may be causing or contributing to this.

Also make sure you're well hydrated, and haven't eaten for at least an hour.

Just a few ideas ;)

My brother has a similar problem, though I think he may be a much different case from you.

He was very unfit (in his defense, when we started training, so was I), and when he started doing any kind of cardio that required excessive movement, he would feel like vomiting.

I asked my trainer and the gym's PT director about it, and they said there was a possibility that since toxins are often stored in fat, as you workout these toxins are flushed from your organs/fat and into your bloodstream (making it's way to your gastrointestinal tract for expulsion). While there, it makes you physically ill for the obvious reason that your body will try to get rid of toxins like that by any means.

So it may just be a matter of conditioning yourself. I'm not sure if this was the ACTUAL reason (as far as I know he still hasn't gotten over it, but then he's stopped training as well) but worth considering.
