Running Pain

I am in my early 40's and while new to this forum, I have been running for 7+ years on a consistent basis. Over time, I have built up my speed to an overall average of 6:40 minute miles and I usually run between 5.5 - 6.5 miles every other day on a treadmill.

Recently, I have been experiencing leg pains, like shin splints, everytime I run. My lower back on the left and right hurts when running. Also, the toes on my right foot start to feel numb after the first mile, but the feeling gradually returns. I have experienced shin splints and back pains in the past, but I have never lost the feelings in my toes.

I bought shoes that were a 1/2 size bigger, but that did not help the problem. If I take two Advil 45 minutes before I run, I am able to complete at my normal pace without pain. Without Advil, the pain is too much after 2-3 miles.

My legs and back seldom hurt when I am not running, but I am concerned about this latest turn of events. I also do not like the idea of taking Ibuprofen for an extended period of time.

Are there any sites that show proper stretching and running techniques to minimize leg/back pain? Or, is there some other heavy-duty CV exercise I can do and let my lower legs rest for a time? The idea of doing nothing for several weeks, does not sit well with me.

first off, running as much as you do, i'm surprised you did not have problems earlier. There is a lot of impact to running on your shins and knees and it's probably an issue that has grown over time. Also, as you get older, your knees wear down. You should really be running outside on a track or soft ground.

You might want to try some HIIT, same benefit (or more) in much less time means much less beating on the joints and connective tissue. Try doing your 6 mile run just once a week and 6-8 100 yard sprints with a 2-3 minute rest between 2 other days of the week. A little wieght training for the leg muscle might also help. Stronger muscles are better able to support the joints.
