Running on the treadmill HURTS

I just started to go to the gym, to lose weight and to complement my taekwondo training. I'm kinda weak on endurance.

When I get on the treadmill the trainer says do 10 mins walking and 10 mins running. The 10 minutes walking is easy enough but when I start running its a whole different story, the area around my calves is killing me I grit it out for 5 minutes then I go down to walking for a minute. The pain eases, so I try running again and the pain comes back with avengence.

Thing is within 5 mintes the pain is totally gone and there are no ill effects the next day.

Now we do some running for warm-up at taekwondo some days (5-10 minutes) and I never experience this level of pain I may be puffing and panting but not this level of pain.

What is going on here???

shin splints maybe? do a little research on them and see if that describes your pain. there are ways to stretch out and reduce the pain of shin splints.

Otherwise, you might be too tense during running...keeping your form too strict.
make sure you run so the heel strikes first, and you roll towards the ball, then the toes, ina natural motion.
I see people at my gym who 'plod' along on the treadmill, stomping more than walking or running.

Are you inclining the treadmill? If you want to simulate running on the flat road, you should have it set on 1 or 2. No more. Also, how fast are you running? If you are new to the treadmill, try running a bit slower.

Finally, concentrate on your foot motion. Make sure you roll off the foot and push a bit. If you have problems in this area, you will probably get Achilles problems in the future (with longer distances).

yes running on a treadmill will hurt because you are kept at constnat pace....and while out free you can change your pace abilities...

Check out http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/health_and_fitness/4286146.stm

A passage from that article:

All accomplished and elite runners run on the balls of their feet.

The foot should strike the surface with the ball of the foot, in a dorsiflexed position (with toes pointing forward not downwards) otherwise this creates a" breaking" motion.

The heel doesn't touch the ground.

It's very difficult to delearn the heel first, roll foot forward technique. I still use the heel first technique but i'm trying this new one. Feels really odd when trying to run a pace. I keep "tripping" over myself. Guess I need to perfect it at lower speeds first.

Running on a treadmill sucks for your knees and it also hurts with shin splints due to the pounding that your knees take from the treadmill surface.

Actually I find the threadmill smoother then asphalt, I would suggest walking progressivly faster, your body will more slowly adapt to the mouvement and since u'll loose enough weight you wont have as much stress on the knees..

So when u feel ready start running but key is dont rush it... if you still feel the pain after a while, I would consult a physician

i didnt read this thread but if ur overweight treadmills will hurt so use the elliptical or bike
