running in the cold

How do you guys carry on with your training over the winter months? Its been 18 months since I last had some really cold weather and its knocked me for 6, I can't get warm nor can i clear my nose. I hate being cold, it put me off going out even though i know i'll feel loads better after a run or visit to the gym.

Role on summer!

If you do run in the cold I would wear a scarff round your face to try and warm up the air a bit. Would be better if you can run in the gym.
I always get a stitch running in winter so I rairly do it. Plus its always too dark and slippery to run fast.

And for all the Yanks that think winter means putting on a jumper we are talking about an English winter, as in 0'C with a wind chill of -10'C.
Thats 32'F and 14'F.

i dont think thers any reason to run after -15, its no problem running in the cold I like it because you dont get so warm (in the summer it feels like my feet is cooking some times) i find it more pleasant besides its less people out so I have the track I usually run more to my self

Running man - what sort of temperatures are you talking about?
Do you have any tips for running in winters as cold as ours?

lol Oh Noes 0 celcius? It gets down around -40 here with the windchill :) I'm going to buy one of those running masks this year for sure. I've been told they really make a big difference.

Hey niceone! I was digging at the guys in California, Dont start digging at us Brits!

lol

do you run in -40'C?

I was just making funny.. I have not actually run in that temperature before. I've ran in -20, but at the time I wasn't very serious about running so I probably only went about 3-4 km and very slow. I want to maintain some level of activity this winter besides lifting, so I'll try to run twice a week. and when it's REALLY cold, i'll wear 3 pairs of long johns hahah.

I personally love running in the cold/cooler temperatures. I get hot very easily, even though I am in decent shape. In the summer I try to keep up running but the 90+ heat makes it very difficult to run a substantial difference. I also don't like running in gyms because it gets too hot.

I run at night when its cooler, and I love running in the colder weather.

To each his own I guess.

Yeah it's different for everyone. For me running in anything less than 60* and my lungs are on fire. It's harder to breath for me in the cold.

I am talking about celcius and I live in Norway can it get any colder? :D

Just make sure your hands and head are protected and wear sports underwear you should be fine, might be a little cold in the start but as you get warmer its ok

i just can't deal with the cold, i hate winter and love summer, thats why i timed by trip to aus and NZ so that i missed last winter. Unfortunatly now its been 18 months since i've experienced cold weather and i've also lost a bit of fat (my natural insulation) so the cold weather is tearing through me. I'm sat here with 4 layers and a scarf on while everyone thinks its a bit warm with the heating on!

Ooo... thats cold!

Personally, once it gets down to 5'C I do all my CV in the gym.

I don't think its so bad, its mostly about wearing the right clothes, but to be honest I don't really run so much in the winter, more cross country skiing... I am really looking forward to that now, haven't done it in something like a year :) :)

You just deal with it.

When I was in the Army they taught us just to deal with it. Use common sense, if its 10 or below....I would take safety measures. IE. Mask, gloves, and just plain warm clothes.

I must say I find it easier to run in the cold as well....no overheating. I'm sure it's doesn't get near as cold here (Indiana) as in Norway but I run no matter what the conditions are. Coldest run was about 5 degrees F, so about -15 C. And I still wear split shorts in this nasty weather, nothing under or over. To stay warm I wear thermal gloves and a head band that covers the ears, long sleeve t-shirt and a thermal jacket. A thick sock around my ***** keeps it from freezing. Bad experiences peeing in that weather. Just do what you got to do to stay warm. If that means running indoors, then get on treadmill. I personally hate running indoors/treadmills so I just force myself to get out there and get it over with. You can do it.

I like running in the cold. As stated above, no overheating...but that also brings into play being too cold. When I run outside I usually wear shorts, a sweatshirt for warm up and Under Armor ColdGear. Then after warm ups I just go off in shorts and my ColdGear top, and that basically is enough for me. Now that hasn't been tested in really cold temperatures, but so far (50's) it has worked well. If it's too cold or I'm just being a wuss that night I'll run on the treadmill. They truely come in handy when it starts to snow and pour here. (New England weather ) If running outside, just keep yourself warm while running, that's what's most important.
