They (UnderArmour for one) make all kinds of light weight, moisture wicking, warm running clothes, hats and gloves.

Layering is good, the big problem comes in when you have to shed layers, you don't want to have to carry a bunch of stuff. The general rule of thumb is to dress for 20 degrees WARMER than it is outside, because once you start running you will quickly heat up some.

Here are some other good pointers:

Make sure you warm up adequatly before running on a cold day. If you don't get your muscles stretched out and warmed up you will pull something. Other than that get some good, light coldweather running gear and enjoy jumping over snowbanks.

i think hurdling is fun anyway... :)

Yes, make sure you do warm up and stretch. That's very important. I concur with all the advice given here. You really don't want to put too much on as you will heat up pretty fast so dress for warmer as RedT said.

Heya thanks for all the advice, i always walk for at least 5 minutes before running.

Im from suffolk in the UK.

You might want to do a little more than that in extremely cold weather. I like to stretch for 5 minutes, warm up for 5, and walk about an 1/8 of a mile.

Last year I did a 10K race on 7 below. IT WAS TOTALLY AWESOME! i would also say that you going out there and walking for 5 minutes and then picking up and running, is probably setting you up closer to injury.

a walk is not enough exersion to get your heart pumping and your knees will actually get colder. the walk is not a warm up in freezing weather, it is more of a chill the bones.

do some jumping jacks, and pushups, and bend overs, and windmills and try to feel a drip of sweat somewhere inside the house, then enter the cold and go!

be cautious coming out the door and onto the steps when your rate is already up :)

The most important thing running in the winter is being visible!!!!!!

DONT GET KNOCKED OVER BY CARS!!!!

I Wear sweat shirts or tech gear tops with zippers, unzip like a thermostat, the warmer it gets the lower the zipper. the 20 degree rule is good but my legs feel like lead when it is even cool let alone cold so I wear sweat pants or tech pants from 50 degrees down and never add a layer below the belt. I ran last year down to 12 degrees. Also have ear covers and jersey gloves. Oh yea, I put extra insulation in one strategic location when it is below 20 degrees. My old DI's used to tell me you never feel stuff freezing, why take the chance?
