Running And Protien Shakes

can somebody fill me in on taking a protein shake before or after running and what its effects are

( i heard something like if u have one before u run it helps burn fat and wont eat at ur muscle)

nah!! the body aint gunna get it to the core of the muscles that fast.

I train for long events and i have found that a protein shake with water, not milk, is of the easiest nutritions to keep down without GI issues, or cramping. the thicker you can take it in the better.

I suspect you are talking endurance running (150 min plus)?

if you are not, then go with what is most comfortable for your run- ie: nothing in the gut.
And have the protein shake afterwards. Best right away, and it feels good. But i have also read that within 3-4 hours is fine too.

there are better educated opinions that will post. Mine is only in experimenting, and what I kinda may retain from reading here.

I concur with FF...but that's only cause he's younger, faster, leaner and better looking then me ;)

My thoughts based on what I've heard/experienced:

Protein is the basis of what your body needs to build muscle and other bodily functions....of all the food groups (fats, carbs, protein)...it makes a lousy fuel and it's conversion to energy for fuel is very poor. Also, protein is not easily nor quickly broken down, which is why FF made reference to holding it down....it's digestion is more complex & time-consuming.

Carbs can be converted into energy very efficiently and quickly. Fats can also serve as fuel....but protein is not your ideal source for energy. Before and during your exercise you can consume a bit of simple carbs (fruit, etc)...that ought to give you some better performance.

If you are doing some hardcore anaerobic stuff of intense nature, like power-lifting & heavy weights...then taking some protein may be an issue...but it doesn't sound like you are.

What you may be concerned about is catabolism. I've been told that by taking some BCAA's (Branch Chain Amino Acids) it can help stave-off any catabolism and maybe help the body metabolize and oxidize fat better. I've also been told that unless you are training at a super-high level and pushing crazy-hard, you probably don't need to worry about this. Just eat a reasonable healthy breakfast with some protein and perhaps snack on some easy/light carbs as you do your thing.

That said, I too will defer to other opinions of others who post here.

In most cases, any form of sustained running ( and if it's sustained for any length of time ...it's likely an ' aerobic ' run ) will rely primarily on some combination of fat and carbs for energy - not protein.

The intensity of the run will determine the proportion of fat and carbs ( the greater the intensity, the greater the oxygen demand and the greater reliance on carbs ) that get used. It's only when a longer running duration comes into play that protein becomes even remotely an issue. So the longer ' endurance ' type of run will tend to burn up a bit more protein as fuel than normal ( which is very low to begin with )

But generally speaking, for most runs, your focus should be on carbs, carbs, carbs both before runs, after runs - an depending on how long your run actually is - possibly during the runs as well.

Perhaps you could describe your running regimen for us.
