Running and Music

I'm curious to hear from other runners on their preference for listening to music during their runs. I'd also like to know how long you've been running for, what distances your runs usually consist of, and how many miles your putting up a week.

I don't listen to music anymore, though I used to all the time when I first started out which in retrospect was rather dangerous since I would run on the roads around my town. For me running is very meditative, helps to clear my mind and organize my thoughts. Without my music I'm left with just my thoughts and the rhythmic sound of my breathing. However, every once in awhile if I'm feeling very unmotivated to hit the trails I'll throw my ear buds on and listen to an enjoyable playlist.

I've been running for about 11 years now. I generally run 5-10 miles at a time when not doing speed workouts and put up about 25-30 a week.

Personally, I ALWAYS listen to music while I run! But then again, I usually run on the treadmill so there isn't that same risk factor that you have. But I guess for me, music helps distract me! I'll focus on the music instead of the run and I'll be able to go longer!
I normally only run a few miles at a time though, I would probably keel over if I ran ten!

I run with headphones by the same reason of fucusing on the music. It helps to run longer as well to study english because I always listen to english songs. =)

I totally feel you on the need for distraction while running on the tread. Even with music or tv I can only manage about 2-3 miles before I give into boredom. I need trails and nature, only then do I really enjoy my runs. I guess that's why I don't really need the music the majority of the time. Being out in the woods or at the beach is calming to me, I feel like music sometimes takes away from that.

Nothing like a solid beat to pump you up and get the afterburners going. Seems to be working for you though, the English music that is. Your writing is very legible. Keep it up!

I always listen to music when I run. My running playlist gets me pumped and the right song can get me going again if I've lost steam along the way. I've never actually been for a run without music, although I've read it's a good idea to try it a few times so you can fully focus on your breathing, technique, etc.

I haven't been for a run all winter (it's too cold outside and running on a treadmill is my idea of torture) but from last April (when I first started running) until mid-November, I was running 2-3 times a week, usually two 5K runs and one 10K run per week. Looking forward to getting back into it... if only the snow would hurry up and melt!!

When i run indoors i seriously need music, but i too prefer to run outdoors, again i listen to music, but not always. Funny thing is i dont listen to upbeat songs xD

I listen to music. run on the mill. roughly 2 miles. been running 2 years on and off due to injury.
I generally dont put in more than 45mins at a time. its a pleasant distraction.
