Rough Estimate of Calories

Could any one give me the rough estimate of calories I eat during the day. I know it's hard with out having it measured and stuff like that but just an estimate would be great.

Breakfast
3/4 cup smoothie (recipe is 1/2 cup low fat vanilla yogurt, 1 cup 1% milk, 1 cup frozen fruit. the recipe makes about 3 cups)
1/2 whole wheat bagel (half the bagel is about 150 calories) with butter

Snack
Couple salted almonds

Lunch
Pita Sandwich (not the tiny pitas but normal sized, with ham or turkey sandwich meat, little bit of cheese, and honey mustard sauce)
Handful of carrots and dip

Snack
Granola bar (I think these are 110 calories)

Supper
Serving of whole wheat pasta with little bit a gravy
Chicken with little bit of bbq sauce

Sorry, I don't know if it's possible but if you could get me a rough estimate that would be great!

you could create an account at - a free site, and keep track of it - as well as other nutrients..

or go to and do some searches...

you know the approximate serving sizes better than we would...

pitas - depending on the size and brand can be anywhere from 150 - 300 calories
bagels depending on size can be 150 - 500 calories

Thanks, I don't think that I could do the counting calories thing. I can't make it that complicated for myself. I guess Icould try to use that just to figure out this one day which is very typical of a normal day for me.
I beleive the bagels were 300 (so half would be 150)
let me see if I can check the pitas. so I don't know the pitas but for some reason 150 is ringing a bell.

calorie counting isn't really that complicated, and it's the most effective tool in getting to where you want to be...

Read labels and pay attention to what portion sizes are.

Thanks. According to that site I eat about 1350 calories a day. Is that an ok amount? If you need more info on my plan go to my Journal.

1350 seems a little low to me - in the nutrition forum, there's a stickied thread about Nutrition Guidelines, that should give you a lot of helpful information.

I can tell you right off the bat that your bagel in the morning probably isn't the best choice. Your body will convert that into sugar very quickly, which will raise your insulin and swith your metabolism into fat storage mode. This is because the insulin cannot contain all of that extra sugar at one time. You are probably thinking, my bagel doesn't have much sugar in it. That might be true but it is made with flour which converts to sugar instantly in your body. This will cause you to store body fat for a good portion of the day until you normalize your blood sugar. Take the focus off of the number of calories and more on what type of foods you are putting in your body and what they will do to your metabolism.

I hope this helps.

I'm not sure what to do at this point.... but you seriously need to chill with the misinformation.

Just take a few breathers and calm down.... regroup if you will. Maybe introduce yourself to the forum and take a read around. At the rate you're going though, offering a bunch of piss poor advice out isn't going to get you far here. That's the bottom line.

I mean cripes, you're still clinging to the model of insulin = fat?

Using the insulin model of lipogenesis is outdated and ignores the last ~20years of research.

You do realize while insulin is raised, and the body is at an energetic deficit, the body has to provide energy from somewhere, and ultimately this somewhere is fat.

You keep saying stop focusing on calories and focus on the types of foods you eat. YOU DO REALIZE THAT YOU CAN EAT THE 'CLEANEST' FOODS ON EARTH, YET, IF YOU ARE IN A ENERGETIC SURPLUS, YOU ARE GOING TO GAIN FAT, NO?

Come on man....

Steve-

You obviously are THE authority of this forum. I didn't realize i was going to be stepping on toes while offering help.

Just so you know, people are not getting fat from eating too many fruits and vegetables. The high caloric foods are largely coming from processed foods and that is the real problem for most people.

Explain a couple things to me since you seem to be the expert: Why is it that when i step on my scale, it says that i should be taking in 4700 calories per day to maintain my weight. When i was a higher body fat %, it said i should be taking in 3800 calories?

Does body composition impact how many calories a person should take in? Does a body builder need to take in more calories than someone who doesn't work out at all?

Thanks.

Look bud, this isn't about you and it's certainly NOT about me.

It's about the information.

I don't care if it's coming from you or if it's coming from Santa Clause..... it doesn't change the fact that the information is bad. In each of your posts I've seen since you've entered this lovely community, I've called you on what I see wrong.

And each time that I do, you resort to turning this into something it's not: Namely something personal.

So do me and everyone else a favor and stick to the point and the topic. Stop worrying about who and start worrying about what.

Just so you know, people are not getting fat from eating too many fruits and vegetables.

You do realize this means absolutely nothing in the context of what we're discussing?

The high caloric foods are largely coming from processed foods and that is the real problem for most people.

And this.

Explain a couple things to me since you seem to be the expert: Why is it that when i step on my scale, it says that i should be taking in 4700 calories per day to maintain my weight. When i was a higher body fat %, it said i should be taking in 3800 calories?

You expect me to answer some dumb question before you answer all the things I called you out on pertaining to hardcore advice you were handing out to members here?

Come on man.... that's not how it works.

Stand by the things you say or don't say them at all.

Does body composition impact how many calories a person should take in? Does a body builder need to take in more calories than someone who doesn't work out at all?

When you start asking me questions that are above the 101 level of understanding of metabolism, physiology, and etc... you'll get answers from me.

Until then, don't shoot off at the lips with a bunch of advice unless you're willing to stand by what you're shooting.

The tables will not be turned any other way.

And no, I'm not The Authority. We don't have that here. We've got a great group of people who just so happen to be educated. And when self-proclaimed gurus march in and start firing advice before a simple introduction, we tend to be standoffish.

Pair this with the advice you've given and the things you've been called on... and the fact that you are yet to respond directly.... and you've got a recipe for the situation you find yourself in currently.

Period.

Not sure what this means but this sounds a little bit insulting to me. I'm not sure when I've ever claimed to be a "guru" as you said. Not really sure what you want me to answer either?

I'm done participating in this conversation because it stopped being productive a long time ago. Sorry again if I offended someone with what i've said.

You claimed guru status when you appealed to authority in the other thread and said you were taught under Shari so-and-so.

That was supposed to be impressive... but your answers have been extremely far from impressive.

And you're not sure what I'm asking? Go to the other thread... it's littered with questions. I think I posed a few here too.

I'm really not one for hand-holding.... but if you seriously want me to generate a list of questions that have been asked to you within the last 20 minutes.... I will go out of my way and to that for you. :)

MysticRealm,

Yes counting calories can be a pain. Are you really going to let some extra bookkeeping get in the way of your goal? Also, you only have to figure out the calories for a particular food once. The goal is to be precise about it for a vast majority of days.

One resource I love is which provides not only calories but also all the major nutrients and vitamin/mineral content.

Just to ring in:

Just like Steve, I have a university education (BSc Kinesiology) on this issue...plus the requisite secondary 'outside the institution' experience.

Steve is completely right on this issue.

I don't say it just for kicks...if you disagree with anything on this thread I will happily address it (in case Steve is busy).
