revamp rep system

From my observations on this forum, I can see that rep points really don't mean anything. Some people, myself included, have recieved rep from other members with high rep when it was undeserving, and this has swelled our rep rating far past waht we deserve. In fact, there are many on this forum with extremely high rep that do not have the knowledge or experience to back it up. I think those people know who they are, and I myself liekly should not have the rep I do.

These reputation points were given out seemingly at random without any merit (I got some, I know this.) While some were given in good will, and I tihnk I deserved some of my rep, the reputation system is misrepresenting the actual abilities and knowledge of some members. People who are new and need help come to this forum, and are likely to take the advice of those with higher rep, and some of that advice is just plain wrong. It's hard to argue against numbers though.

I think rep should either be removed or redesigned to better represent the capabilities of our members.

p.s. this isn't to say that some members don't deserve it, I think it's fairly obvious which ones do and which ones don't.

I like the rep system, except I don't understand why some deserving members have extremely low rep. Mreik is an example of that. Why all of the negative rep? He seems helpful.

Mreik is extremely helpful.

Why do you like the reputation system?
You have to admit that many with that high rep are not deserving of it.

Honestly for me, Chillen gave me half my rep, and the other half was actually, so I only deserve realy half of it, and it isn't a good representation of my abilities.

This is true for alot of people.

I like having it.

I don't remember how much of my rep is from chillen, but when he did rep me it was for a good reason. I would say, If I had to guess that about 1/4 is from him.

But how then would we judge who was deserving of their rep?

Or how would we prevent someone completely deserving like mreik from getting massive negative rep?

its just a rep system i wouldnt dwell on it

Yeah, I think it's more for fun than anything else. I certainly wouldn't take advice from someone just because of their rep, and I also wouldn't ignore someone's advice if they had low rep.

honestly, having low/high rep means nothing to me. As I don't tihnk anyone here judges people on it and it really doesn't matter what a bunch of people I don't know perceive about me based on rep. I'm not really dwelling on it like it's a big problem.

I'm just saying that there are those whose rep is misleading, and people who only join this forum for a quick question don't always follow the correct answer because they may just look at rep to judge advice.

I don't know how we would judge who is deserving, maybe mods would have to rep. but Mreik is a perfect example of how the rep system is pretty much a joke since he has negative rep while he is obviously deserving otherwise.

w/e, i guess it doesn't really matter.

I think most people on this forum who have been on long enough to get high rep have the same basic idea about fitness/weight loss/weight gain. It's not like members with 50+ rep are telling people to eat 10 cupcakes a day to lose weight. Most of the advice givers give good, logical advice. We may have slight differences in opinion of how one should go about achieving their fitness goals, but no one's answer is completely right for everyone. We all respond to different things, therefore all of our advice is valuable. I have taken a lot of advice from a lot of members on this site and some of them were more experienced than others. Sometimes, the advice from the people with less experience worked better for me.

Just a thought.

Mreik has negative rep at his request to 'bite his thumb' at the rep system.

Revamping the rep system on a system of merit would take someone moderating the rep system=not going to happen.

The rep system is just for fun. New members should take advice on what makes sense or agrees with the research they should be doing.

At some point some members tried to make the case that high rep=user with merit. This is not the case, as demonstrated by Mreik, who has max neg rep and who happens to be a moderator, Derrwyddon with her past requests for "neg rep only" and my frivilous repping to people just to prove a point.

Yeah, the rep system is mostly a way for members here to jock each other. Only a bit of it actually comes from people who respect the quality of a post...

Yeah. Rep system is more a way to show someone that you think they are fun, cool, knowledgable, etc.
I usually just give them when a post is good, content wise. But I have given rep just for the heck of it before.

I think i should get at least 5 reps of every member.

As we know more reps = More knowledge.

Therefore iv worked out if i get repped i will be more intelligent.

I think the system is fine. Sure it's not perfect but there really isn't a way to make it perfect. There have been times when I really took time to help someone with something and got nothing. There have been other times when I just made a mildly funny comment and got rep from it.....that's life

Plus we all know:

red > green
ps3 > xbox360
deads > squats
Evo > everyone

Those are 4 things I learned when I was born.
