responses..

Hey everyone, Im not ragging on anyone specifically.. But some responses I read just suck.

Every day there are new members coming in with genuine concern and little knowledge and they are asking, 'how do i get bigger..?' or 'how do i lose fat..?'
Im reading responses like:
'eat right and train properly'.

Honestly, these responses are useless, what is the point? If I came on here and said: 'guys, i've never driven a car before, and I want to be a good driver, what do I do?' and people respond: 'get into the car and turn it on, then press the gas' I would wonder why the heck you even bothered.
I know that this is a supporting community and people want to help. But, if you don't know.. or don't have the right answer, why bother?

I know we get the same questions over and over but instead of giving a half assed response, why not direct them to a thread where the topic has been discussed, or just leave it be.

Im on a low cal diet and cranky.. gimme a break :)

You know you're 100% right but frankly i get tired of people coming in and asking the same question over and over. Most of the time i stay away from those type of threads but i can understand that people get frustrated so they give a useless response. Some of the stuff new members ask though seriously could've been asnwered by themselves with a couple hours maybe even less research on the interent, that's the bit that annoys me most.

i hear that man.. The nature of a forum i guess. There should be a pop up window for new members that pops up the first 10 times they log in reminding them to utilize the SEARCH function.

I agree that if you don't know the answer, you shouldn't respond or speculate as bad advice can often be accepted as gospel by new people. Some people who join up aren't very 'forum savvy' and so won't think to use the search facility right off the bat. If people are frustrated with answering the same questions, they should simply leave the responses to people who are not in my opinion...

btw niceone, that is exactly how you drive a car! ;)

The one thing that bothers me is when people say they have a recent injury, what should they do? Noone should be giving what "THEY THINK" someone with an injury should do. Only a medical professional should be giving that advice.
After they have been cleared, if they come asking for help, only people with experience or knowledge of human movement or corrective flexibility and exercise should then be responding.

I have to agree whole heartedly with that one too!
No one can diagnose over the internet. We can speculate and give guidance, but telling the person to try this or try that can really be dangerous since we do not know the extent of the injury. If it's bad enough that you are worried, you should likely see someone for the injury.

Excellent point guys!
What bothers me the most is a lot of the misinformation given to some of these inexperienced members. They end up confused or worse doing something wrong or totally unnecessary. That only leads to someone getting discouraged or worse having a bad taste for fitness all together.
It would be nice if newbies would have to read through some type of FAQ section for these repeated basic questions.

When I was new I read through a great deal of posts, just for that reason, but even though I did, when I asked a question I got the standard "newbie" answers. It was partly my fault though, cause I wasn't very specific. Anyway, I don't know where I was going with that, but I thought I'd jump in and agree. There really should be some message or something when you click on 'new thread' that says soemthing like please check past posts to make sure your question hasn't been answered. Plus if you read around a little you can tell who knows what they're talking about and who's full of crap.

I also HATE it when people double post. I think it's fair enough if you want to bump your topic because no one has replied to it but it's annoying when people make a post and than make another one starting off with something like....

"also, you should be doing etc etc etc." - USE THE EDIT BUTTON! Just because you might have more posts than other people it doesn't mean sh!t

Or newbies giving out advice to other noobs.

If I don't know anything about the subject I leave it to some of the more experienced members. A lot of times I will just post my personal experience but try to avoid advice outside my knowledge base.

Forums like this are great but can also be dangerous. There will always be conflicting opinions and ideas. I might give advice to someone that will work for them but it might not apply to the next person who reads it.

When someone comes to the forum and says that they want to get big they often get responses like
'you need to eat at least 3000 calories, and do 3 full body workouts per week.'
Now.. this advice might work for some people, but answers like this are so subjective. 3000 calories for one person might be way too much, or way to little depending on their size. And 3 full body workouts might work wonders for them, but for all those skinny ectos out there, that wont do sh*t..

I guess if everyone knew all their stats and always posted them up it would make it easier to respond to their questions, but sometimes these general 'eat-this-much-and-lift-like-this'--answers are just crap..

I have visited various other message boards but this one by far at least that I have seen has collectively the best attitude towards fitness. The worst place i have ever seen is sparkpeople.com i think. They pass out 1200 calories like candy over there. Even the "resident experts" tell a women of 220and 5'5 to do cardio 5 days a week and eat 1200 calories. Its sad really. So the information here for new people is really top notch i think. T nation while great I think can be a little intimidating to newcomers for its high technical factor. This truely is a good middle ground.

I try to reply to what I feel I have a good grasp on, and leave what I don't to others. For example you wont see me passing out to much weight routine info just yet as I am still learning alot on the subject. But give me some time and alot of reading and soon i will be playing with the big boys;)

I agree that the folks that post on this site are great, very encouraging and helpful. But being a noob myself, I don't see the problem with noobs asking the same questions over and over. Most of them don't know what to do and are genuinely looking for some good advice, and its always nice to get a personalized response to your questions and concerns. I know for it's probably annoying for some of you long time posters, but think back to when you were a noob, and when you were asking the same types of questions. I just think its nice to get answers to you the questions that you ask, not the questions others ask. i'm sorry if this sounded like a tirade, it wasn't meant to be. I thank everyone who has taken the tim to post tips and suggestions on any of my posts, no matter how repetetitive, i truly appreciate the time you all spent looking at and thinking about my questions, and i hope to see favorable results soon...

Im scared to ask any questions now!
