Residents of Chicago - Help Please

Oh residents of Chicago... A little assitance...

I'm potentially relocating to Chicago in the next few months, and while I know the city, touristy crap and restaurants really well, I don't know neighborhoods and places to live...

I'm middle aged curmudgeon who really has no tolerance for children, so I don't want a "family friendly" neighborhood - there's nothing worse than going out for coffee on sunday morning and being surrounded by strollers full of screaming brats and the parents who ignore them.

I'm not cool, never have been, never will be, so an uber trendy neighborhood isn't my thing either I also don't want to spend a small fortune to live there...

I don't care much about night life so walking distance to the latest cool club - i don't care much about.

It's gotta be near the blue/purple/brown lines, because that's the train to the office and i hate busses - so it's gotta be a train.

I'm not opposed to the suburbs, as long as it's a fairly child-free zone.

I also don't want a college crowd of neighbors either, I can handle city noise, I can't stand people noise.

any suggestions for neighborhoodsin which to look?

I have a friend that lives in a suburb of Chicago, Arlington Heights. I'll email him for you and ask. :)

I always liked the Irving Park area and the surrounding neighborhoods. Not sure how that works out on being close to transportation. I like it because of the architecture. I have friends who live in Lincoln Park and I don't ever see kids running around their neighborhood. I do know the farther north you go the less ethnic it seems to get, so if you like a good mix of people, the northern neighborhoods are not for you. I think Cannon lives in Chicago doesn't he? He may have suggestions.

Is this move all of a sudden?

Lincoln Park is beautiful but might be out of my price range... ethnic neighborhoods are interesting- they usually have good and cheap restuarants...

It's been on the back burner me moving there for a while... just really deciding if it's what I want to do...

I really sound like super-curmudegeon don't i? I'm really a very good neighbor :D

That is easy. She narrowed it down for us.

Take a look at this map. THat triangle between the
brown and blue lines is the near northwest side. Some
of the neighborhoods are not too great, but stay
either north or south of Division and east of I-90 and
she should be fine. There is a sketchy neighborhood
ON Division which she will want to avoid.

If she gives up the train line criteria, she can take
Metra and her options get much, much better. Have her
check out Lombard, Naperville (western suburbs), Mount
Prospect, Des Plaines, Palatine (NW suburbs near me)
and Northbrook, Skokie, Evanston (North suburbs). All
of these are near the Metra suburban train system.

now i just need to focus on finding a place - that ranks lower than getting a mamogram- going fora teeth cleaning... I hate having to find aplace to live.. a nd i hate moving even more.. :(

woe is me... :(

Yeah, I know what you mean. We moved into our house in February and it sucked and we still have boxes everywhere.
