Replacing bread?

Because I'm fairly skint at the moment I'm finding it hard to keep to a decent diet. Protein is expensive, while carbs are cheap.

I can try to keep away from sugar but cutting out white bread is really hard - refined white is 19p a loaf compared to ~90p+ wholemeal. Has anyone got any suggestions for replacing bread?

- bread is the base for so much of my diet, and most people's too.

For example, an egg + mayo sandwich. How much better is it to use wholegrain bread? What can replace the bread? We need something flat and cheap.

I managed to cut out bread, rice and pasta for a week but after a while it's just too expensive and impractical. The main problem was - what can you take to work for example.

Try replacing bread with nuts, cottage cheese, tuna fish, cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables, yogurt, protein shakes, protien bars, cold cuts (turkey ham, roast beef), etc.

From a dietary point of view I can think of plenty of alternatives.

But from an engineering point of view:

"what do I house these good foods in?" - tuna sandwich, cheese sandwich, cold cut sandwich....

Perhaps there isn't an answer - I'll just have to try transporting plastic tubs everywhere

Although some of my coworkers think it a little odd, I eat tuna fish right out of the can, salad from the plastic bag it comes from the grocery store in, and "sandwiches" of meat between two slices of cheese.

If you are going to eat bread pick something like a light rye bread, or even better, purchase whole wheat wraps.

dswithers ... ur not weird ... i love a piece of meat wrapped around some cheese (and sometimes with a pickle) and i often eat tuna straight from the can, but i'm allergic to it (and all other seafood), so i have to be careful about how much i eat in one sitting.

I constantly get odd looks from friends and family when they see me eating sliced meat and cheese wrapped together or tuna straight from a can with a bit of mustard. mmm...mmm...

I also eat Tuna that way...and egg salad I'll put in a container and eat it without bread! ...spinach is my new thing now!! with strawberries...

Bread is difficult to cut out cuz its soooo convenient to put things in. I remember wrapping meat in lettuce and stuff....heh heh
Now I take nuts to work, packets of fresh little balls of mozarella cheese, cottage cheese, cut up chicken breast, salad, plain yogurt. It involves carrying tupperware and plastic utensils with you, but I am past caring what my colleagues at work think about it. I live in a super impractical part of the world too, where prepackaged food is practically unavailable, but once you learn to prepare in advance, things are looking up;)

Try making wraps with lettuce... like romaine. Also you could mix egg with avocado and a bit of olive oil (a fave of mine). I too eat tuna out of the can or with a bit of olive oil. It is hard to replace bread!

bread alternatives

There are fairly inexpensive low-carb breads out there...Pepperidge Farms Low Carb/Low Calorie (60 cal, 5 net carbs, 5p) 7 grain, whole wheat or multigrain. Take time to look through your junk mail/newspapers for coupons at various grocery stores, they go way on sale sometimes, or 2 for 1. generally its between $3-4/loaf.

if you feel like splurging on super healthy whole grain bread thats lower in carbs than regular bread go for EZEKIEL *Sprouted Grain* bread which contains more nutritious value than unsprouted grains. I lvoe the taste n' texture of super grainy bread over plain wheat or white any day. it yeilds 80-90calories, 5 grams of fiber and 12-13g net carbs depending on which kind you get. you can find it at Wild Oats, Whole Foods or health section of yr local grocer. THey also go on sale once in a while down to $2.50-$3.00. You can check their websites or even local grocery websites if you dont get junk mail to see what their weekly sales are.

There are also a variety of low carb wraps out there that are failry cheap. if you dont like the chewiness of it you can (lightly) grease a pan w/olive oil and crisp it for a few minutes on both sides. Or even toss is in the oven. La Tortilla factory (latortillafactory.com?) makes ones that are only 3 net carbs, with a great amt of fiber (8g), and 5g of protein at a total of 60calories per wrap. Go for the flavored ones green onion or garlic for added flavor.

The best types of wraps to use lettuce-wise are green or read leaf lettuce, they hold/wrap better i think than romaine. iceberg is good too but it has no nutritious value. try the newest wasabi-horseradish out there that is low in fat/calories and very flavorful and great in wraps. i also like to roast garlic and mash it with avacado (& grated peppercorn medley pepper) to make a flavorful spread that holds wraps together well.

my current obsession is making (low carb tortilla) wraps with canned tuna, salmon, chicken or sliced deli chicken/turkey with chopped spinach, a few bunches of cilantro, chopped scallion, red cabbage <-very nutritious & crunchy & lasts forever good on salads, sandwiches, wraps....) w/fresh squeezed lime on top. it's so delish! cilantro, scallions & lime compliment each other well and are super cheap! ...oh and grated peppercorn medly which i put on pretty much everything, its better and more flavorful than reg. pepper and you can find it in the seasoning/spice section of yr local grocer and it comes in the grater already at around $3.

whole grain alternatives

...ps- if you cant cut out rice & pasta at least switch to a much healthier whole wheat pasta and brown or wild rice, so much better for you. theres also a spinach enriched whole wheat pasta. again if you find these pricey, keep an eye out for sales & discounts. you can buy brown and wild rice in bulk at whole foods/wild oats or in the bulk or health section of your local grocer. they have a whole slew of different grains of rices that are healthier and tastier than white rice you should give a try.

Really great tips Nina...you know when your watching your carbs its hard to come up with some recipes after awhile. :) I was going to really low carb and alot of protein and found I was just bloated but now that I've incorporated more whole wheat it all works out in the long run...just adding herbs etc..can boost that flavour!

Most of the alternatives mentioned wil be more expensive than just changing from white bread to some healthier more expensive bread .
Are you more concerned about the cost or the carbs.
Remember carbs are where you get most of your energy from not protein.
Keep it balanced.
If you want to save money. Cook large portions and freeze what you don't eat. . If you cook a meal for six and freeze 5 of the portions. It saves a lot of moneyPlus it saves a lot of time in food preparation when you come to eat your next meal.

speaking of portions also...I just read which made me really start to take control of my eating situation is that a serving of pasta for example is a half cup cooked...I would eat that while just dishing it out...so portion size is a good thing to look into.

Do you like to bake? You can make great things for pennies….w.w. pizza dough, w.w. lots of things!!!!
