Sport Recovery Eating

Sport Fitness
Lately I have been hanging out with a friend I met in highschool, he was a big lifter (use to squat 500). Anyhow, I figured football and lifting had taught him somewhat about how to lift, so I asked him to give me some pointers.

The first thing he did was tell me that I was wasting my time with the "grandma machines" and needed to free weight. To make a long story short, I had him come into my gym on a 5 day pass to work the hell out of me.

I've gone with him twice (monday and wednesday). Squating, benching, weighted lunges - all new to me. On the verge of blowing chunks, I left the gym yesterday unable to climb into my SUV. Well, I made it but it took some time.

I was nearly bedridden today, haha. My question is this - Should I eat like I'm on deathrow right now?

Is being sore an indication of your muscles needing calories and protein to rebuild? Tomorrow, I'm going to the gym again and frankly- I'm not sure if I'll be able to. Will eating a ton have any effect on recovery time or mass building when you are sore?

I don't really know how eating a lot will affect you, but I would say that you'll probably feel sore and tired a little while before your body gets used to the routines. If you're burning a lot of calories then it's probably a good idea to increase your protein intake.

Well if your muscles hurt, that is an indicator you sure worked them good. Well not good, but you worked them. =P

Your friend is generally right, keep at it and eat big, as Superman would say.

Yeah, I will eat big, but does eating alot when your sore build more muscle than when you are not sore? Or possibly increase healing time?

soreness just means your not conditioned to the load applied. dont base workouts off soreness, base them off progress :)

soreness could indicate any of the following

micro muscle tears which any way occurs when you exercise

high lactate(by product in exercise) in muscles. usually associated with long workouts and/or Doms(delayed onset muscle soreness) caused by free radical damage to muscles

Eat big as mentioned by Nodody

Also taking a multi-vitamin helps reduce the free radical damage.
i prefer natural sources though;green tea for eg is 10 times more powerfull at eleminating free radicals than vitamin Cs
I heard this somewhere; if free radicals arent lowered in the first three hours of exercise they remain high in the body for the next 48 hours which is bad and unhealthy.

If you can eat, keep eating. It's not good to completely stuff yourself, just eat until you are full. As I've worked out over the last year and a half I have found myself eating more and more.

But yea you can't get big without eating. Ya gotta eat!
