Recovering from injury...

I recently got a bit of a knee injury, I don't quite know why but possibly from upping my mileage too much too soon (going from 5.6 -> 8 miles). Its not really an injury, but my left knee feels more sore than it should be.

The last few weeks I've gone back to running 3.8 miles to try and nurse myself back to health, and every time I'd come back and my knee would be sore for a few days.

Last night I felt fine so decided to try again and I absolutely caned it round, shaving 1m 30s off my PB for the 3.8 miles. Thing is, today I'm absolutely fine, no injuries!

So what's the score with that then?

well how sore should it be??? :D

u a member of a gym?

are your goals distance running, fitness, or fat loss?

Jogging is very harsh on the joints. It may be connective tissue problems or muscle or bone. A lot of things can go wrong with the knee.
If running is a must for you, here are a few things you should do:
-Promote proper "torque force" - meaning each joint must learn to bare enough force so the other joints don't get injured or begin to overdominate.
- I have my "I gotta run" clients do prisoner squats and heel walks (walking with toes of ground) in order for them to promote proper torque force and ankle flexibilty. You can check out the prisoner squat here:

- Joggers usually get pretty tight in the hip flexor complex and calf complex....so stretch them. Also, a MUST for all jogger types is to purchase a cheap (or expensive) foam roll....and "roll out" the IT band (iliac/tibial). The IT band can not be stretched (like any other tendon) and needs to get massaged out or rolled out.

Goodluck to you

Well my goal is to run a marathon, but obviously that depends on how I progress with this 'injury'.

Thanks for the info trainerty, but I really don't understand what you mean by "roll out the IT band"... do you know of an article or something on it?

How soon did you up your mileage by 2.4? I hope not TOO soon. My best advice would be take it slow and steady. How long away is the marathon you're planning on running? and when was the last time you ran and your knee hurt for a few days? If the marathon is a good distance away I def say work your way back to it slowly to ensure that your knee is almost, if not, as good as it was.

BTW, good article trainerty.

I was doing 3.8 miles for ages... then I moved onto 5.6 which I did for probably around a month, then I went onto 8 miles.

And trainerty, thanks for that article. I'll look into getting a foam roll :)
