Recently diagnosed with MS

Hi All :)

Back in May (the 17th to be exact) I was diagnosed with relapsing/remitting MS (multiple sclerosis). The "episode/attack/exacerbation" that led to my hospitalization and diagnosis affected my right leg (greatly) and my right arm...with loss of control and weakness in both. My arm recovered quicker than my leg. At one point in the hospital, I couldn't wiggle my toes on my right foot and my leg trembled severely when trying to elevate it a few inches off the bed. At this point I am probably 95% back to normal. I walk with a slight "hitch in my get-along" but my arm/hand (other than slight numbness to the touch) is closer to 100% in function.

Before that, I was running on my treadmill and riding my lifecycle at least every other day and doing strength training on the off days.

Since my hospitalization and diagnosis, I've started therapy on Betaseron...one of the 4 "disease modifiers" My self injections, every other day, leave me with flu-like symptoms for the following day. About the the time I feel recovered from the previous injection, it's time for the next one.

Day before yesterday, I was able to do 20 minutes non-stop on my lifecycle and hope to gradually increase that to 30-45.

I feel like the treadmill benefits me far more than the bike...I just need to get back into the swing of running again.

Anyone else have MS and face these challenges?

Scott

Hi Scott,

How old are you? My mom is turning 60 and was diagnosed with MS 8-10 years ago. She's doing well, but on many medications. I know she attends support groups that help her understand this disease and how others cope with it.

Her activity level is great. Her doctor preaches that she needs to move/exercise. She's not running marathons or anything but loves to walk. She'll be out strolling the neighborhood every day. What does your Dr say about returning to your exercise routine, or modified version of it?
