reaching for former glory

Three to four years ago (I was 24/25 years old), I was working out in the gym (cardio and weights, 1.5 hours) twice a week, running 3-4 miles twice a week and playing football (soccer) once a week and all in all, I was as fit as a butchers dog and felt great.
However, after destroying myself at university and generally not doing exercise regularly, I am striving to regain this former vitality. Although I am working hard and improving slowly (over the past two months), I feel that I am lacking a certain explosive turn of pace when running that I had before. Also, even though I am running well at the moment (3 miles, twice a week - fairly one-paced), swimming and going to the gym, my stamina still does not seem to be improving as it should, or as it did a few years ago?
Am I looking back through rose-tinted spectacles, or have I reached an age where I am 'losing it?'. I doubt the latter, but do feel my progress is lacking.

Sounds to me that you are just out of your prime. You can still get in shape, it is just going to be slightly harder than before. It's just a matter of adding in 1 extra session every fortnight. Seriously, you are not old yet.
