Re-introducing myself.

Mainly for the benefit of the new people, I'm gonna introduce myself again :).

My name is Allen, I've been on the boards since January sometime. I took a little hiatus from working out while baseball season went on. Now I'm back in the gym and back on the boards! (No comments from the peanut gallery either - that means you Karl! ;) ) I've lost 41 lbs between December and now by eating right and exercising , and gave a little advice here and there (as well as learning quite a bit).

A lot of the vets on the board know me pretty well here (I'm not gonna even attempt to list everyone because I know I'll miss someone, then that person will start flooding my PM box, and leaving voodoo curses on me :p ). For those who are new and I haven't met, I look forward to talking to you all.

P.S. Karl, I'm back to work here, just thought I'd let you know :)

Rip, If you read this, they're talking about bringing The Green Goblin back in Spiderman 3 and Dafoe is unavailable, you may be able to get that role :)

Yay! Welcome back! I missed you so much dear! ....I mean....dude....yeah...dude. Good job man on that 42lbs. God DAMN man your good. Keep it up! Best of luck!

actually i've been in the martial arts for years, allen. except until lately, as i live in the south now and havent been able to find a school that offers what i want - that is real workouts and real technique. i'm trying atlanta next as i think i may find what i'm looking for there. how's your training going?

Its going pretty well. I test for 8th kyu June 4th. Who the heck was asking me about getting started in MA? Hehe I'm sure I'll remember.

I have a connection on finding schools in certain areas. Whats your zip code and style your interested in, and I can pass it along to this gentleman, maybe find you a school in Atlanta.

i was trained in kenpo - what most people call "kung fu". actually though what i'm looking for is kick-boxing (finding my style of kenpo here would be very difficult). i've done kick-boxing a few times and i like the heavy cardio aspect of it, and constant workouts. we had this in my old classes but here in the south my experience is that most schools toss out the exercise part of it to keep lazy people from quitting, a huge problem with martial arts schools in general these days. i do think atlanta may have something to offer, though. and any help is appreciated - thanks.
good luck on your upcoming test, cant say i used to look forward to those too much, LOL! i'm sure you'll do well on it though, allen.

could be muay thai, but doesnt have to be. just solid, steady workouts with sparring. by workouts i mean lot's of pushups, crunches, leglifts, sets of kicks, punches, combinations, etc. i say this because the schools i've viewed in my area usually screw around too much, dont do NEARLY enough exercise, and are simply too easy. i'm sure you've noticed by now belts dont really mean anything, it's what you personally put into martial arts that you get out of it - i've seen black belts that (as my old instructor was fond of saying) couldnt fight their way out of a wet paper bag. we used to do a ton of exercises at my old school, i would leave exhausted but charged up, if that makes any sense, LOL! i want to find that again. i'm actually thinking of trying regular boxing too, BTW. that's a good workout from what i've seen.

Thanks evo :) glad to be back in the game !

Ray, your absolutely right brutha, I could care less what belt rank I am, I just enjoy learning. My school is light on the exercise until the sensei decides your serious about MA, then he starts to push you. He's honest about it though, he'll teach the basics to anyone, even if they don't want to put the effort into it. Those kind of students pay the bills. THe ones who advance 1-2 belt ranks then quit, they're a dime a dozen. Once he feels your working your butt off, he'll start putting the effort into training, and expect the student to do the same.

I haven't heard back from the guy I know who finds schools for people though :(.

yep, it's absolutely true, allen. the school i went to in CA had just opened the studio i trained in when i joined. over the 3 years i was 1st there, out of maybe 200 people over that time, i think 6 to 8 of us made it to black belt. pretty much everyone else dropped out eventually. and of course even fewer ever made it to 2nd degree or above (including me, as i moved to the east coast). i'm at the point now where i dont want to start again in a new style, plus i like kenpo a lot. so i figured i'd try kick boxing or regular boxing - get a great workout, some sparring, but not be forced into another style or new forms, etc. there's a place i saw in atlanta last week but didnt have time to check out, i'm going there later this week to see if it's any good.
as far as yourelf goes, it looks like you already know what you need to do - and are doing it. let the gold-brickers cheat themselves when they do exercises and techniques half-ass, they'll pay for that if they ever have to fight someone. just focus on yourself and be the best you can. i hope that wasnt too preach-y, LOL!
and yeah you're right about the slackers paying the bills, it's too bad though. people are just so damn lazy these days, that's why gyms always try to sign people up for 2 years at a shot if they can - they know most people will quit after a few weeks, usually by feb 1st, LOL!
thanks for checking on schools for me though, just LMK if your friend writes you back. & i'll LYK how my atlanta trip goes.

Those muffins are good, and they make me see funny things. Those muffins are my friends :p.
