Sport Rate my diet

Sport Fitness
I have moved to mostly a non meat diet....I am 40 years old, 5' 11". My starting weight was about 217 and I'm down to 185 since January 07.

I don't own any weights, so my exercise program is restricted to cario only - at least 3 times a week of 30 minutes worth of elliptical training.

My goal is to reduce the fat, especially around the belly.

My diet is as follows:

breakfast - ounce of nuts
snack 1 - piece of fruit
snack 2 - piece of fruit
lunch - all natural peanut butter and sugar free jam on whole wheat bread (2 slices)
snack 3 - piece of fruit
snack 4 - piece of fruit
dinner - Can really be anything from egg white omlette to chili etc
night - 2 cups of tea, fruit bar

Through the day, I will drink 2 glasses of milk and have 8 glasses of water. I also take a multivitamin daily.

Generally, I take in 1750 calories per day.

Any input on my diet or goals?

There's not a number low enough to rate your diet man.

1750cals a day...you're starving.
You stopped eating meat....why?! Its obviously not about 'eating animals' or the treatment that our food grade livestock receives. And since humans are omnivores, it can't rightly be 'because its healthier'.

plus the fact you're not weight training ....jeez.

Here's what'll happen. You're not exercising much, and starving yourself. The body isn't getting enough daily protein because you don't eat meat. Soooo, the body is gonna lose lean muscle mass, and some fat...but you'll quickly plateu on the low cal un-balanced diet, and you won't have a lot of energy either, so the belly fat will persist.

Basically everything Malkore said. I honestly don't know how you can feel ok on what you're eating. Not only have you practically eliminated protein but you managed to make your number one source of food simple carbs. Geez!

Not only is this way to little food, but it's effect, fat storage, is to do the complete opposite of what you are trying to do which I'm assuming is to burn fat.

Your breakfast and snacks would not seem like enough to keep a man going throughout the day, so I am assuming that the bulfk of you calories is coming from your one big meal, dinner? This is also not good.

This is an interesting short article that you may find helpful:

Thanks for everyones response, I didn't realize there there were issues with my caloric intake.

The 1750 caloric number came from a number of online calculators that indicated 2150 calories to maintain weight, 1750 to lose weight.

I don't find I'm hungry during the day, except after work on my way home when I find I am hungry.

As for weight training, I haven't incorporated that into my routine yet, mostly because I don't own weights and I know if I get a gym membership, I probably would go for a while, but then stop.

Hence the reason for using an elliptical machine at home.

For those that felt my calories were insufficient, please advise what you feel I should take in. I've got a desk job, so exercise consists of cardio, 30 min, at least 3 times a week

it sounds like you calculated your BMR....but without ANY activity modifier. BMR is your 'I'm in a coma/bed ridden, this is what I need to maintain my weight'.

as soon as you become mobile, you need calories beyond the BMR level. I would take your 2100 value, and multiply by 1.3-1.4 for an actual maintenance ESTIMATE. its still just a guess...the only way to know your maintenance, is eat at an estimate for 2 weeks,a nd then see if you gained/lost any weight, and adjust from there.

a nurse once told me the average coma patient gets about 1900 calories a day through an IV. take that with a grain of salt....but you're still eating too little.

on a side note...join a gym, and use the contract as a reason to keep going. "well, I paid for a year, I better friggin use it cuz I'm not getting the money back"
