Sport Quitting Smoking

Sport Fitness
After 13 years of smoking I'm calling it quits. The past couple years I've been a real light smoker, like about 5 cigs a day. It's been almost 24 hours since I've had one last, and the cravings aren't that bad...I think because I've become used to smoking so little.

From what I've read in Men's Health, smoking actually increases your metabolism...so when you quit it slows down your metabolism, which is why people tend to gain weight when they quit. I've been running for the past two months and lost about 12 pounds, so I don't want that to happen.

What advise would you give to those who are quitting to avoid weight gain? Also is there anything nutritionally that I could do to cleanse my body of all the toxins so the cravings won't be so bad?

I quit about a year ago.
I was getting unfit and it was effecting my workouts. I told myself that if I smoked I wouldnt go back in the gym for 3 days. This really helped, I also used nicorette inhalators, and found them to be very usefull. I used them for about 3 months after quitting.

I found that my cravings were never that bad if there were no smokes around. But if I went to a bar where ppl were smoking it would be really hard not to pinch one off of them.

I doubt it increases metabolism. people tend to gain weight when quitting smoking for 3 reasons:
1. food replaces nictoine
2. food tastes better since your taste buds work again, and sense of smell is better
3. oral fixation...no cigarette in your mouth, so you tend to snack instead

remembe,r it takes just 7 days for all the nicotine to exit your system. after that, its purely mental...breaking the routine of lighting up after dinner, after sex, during a long car trip, or after a couple of cocktails.

just stick with it

7 days huh? That's what I was wondering. Like I said I'm not craving one too bad yet. And I don't want to use nicotine gum because I want to cut the nicotine out all together. Just chewing sugar free gum instead.

Like you said R. Lewis, if I can get through going to bars and having out with my smoking friends this weekend maybe I'll be OK!

I quit smoking as well (to have children).

Congrats on your decision to quit and on starting healthier habits. Not everyone who quits gains weight, and the effect on your metabolism I believe is pretty small. Exercising and not replacing cigarettes with junk food will pretty much counter whatever effect the smoking had on metabolism.

I bought tins of wintergreen Altoids. they last about as long as a cigarette, and are full of intense flavor. it helped.

I know about altoids. I have a tin at work and one in my car. I've also been chewing a lot of sugar free gum, and haven't resorted to snacking. So far the cravings haven't been too bad, so I haven't caved in yet (it's been about 2 whole days). Also it's been kind of a stressful week on top of this (work, girlfriend, etc...). Luckily my desire to get in shape and change my life around are strong so I have a lot of motivation.

When you want a cig don't ignore the urg... don't fufill the urge by giving yourself a substitute... Look up at the sky... take a deep breath and tell that little devil on your shoulder "NO!"...

I'll leave you with this...

There was an old man who smoked a cig.. I don't know why he smoked the cig

There was an old man who popped an altoid to not smoke the cig... I don't know why he smoked the cig...

There was an old man who chewed some gum to avoid an altoid to not smoke the cig... I don't know why he smoked the cig...

There was an old man who ate some licorish to avoid some gum to avoid an altoid to not smoke the sig... I don't know why he smoked the cig...
