quick question.

I've read around that it's not a good idea to exercise the same muscle daily, and I've recently begun doing push ups daily. so my question is, is it okay for me to do push ups daily, or should I do push ups and say take my rest day and do crunches/sit ups? personally I'd rather stick with the push ups daily, as it's one of the few exercise I really enjoy, but if I'm really gonna hurt myself (which I'm sort of doubting) I guess I could find something else to do. If it helps I'm a 16 year old male, with a thin/average build, and I'm 5 foot 9 inches, maybe 10 inches.

Push ups work several muscles in the chest shoulders and arms so doing them daily is fine;)

Be creative, find different ways to do push ups...one leg out, 1.5's and many more. Also (important)...add pull ups and learn different types of planks. To answer your question -- you do not have to wait 48 hours in between. I would have light days and harder days...maybe have 1-2 really hard days and then mix it up with easy and medium days. Ya gotta do some lower body work too -- can't look like an upside down pyramid.

Cheers-

The theory is that you wait 48 hours between working the same muscle groups, that way they have a chance to recover and you build on it.

That's why most people split their routines into upper body and lower body days (that's what I do)

CypKitty; you are correct in calling it theory...that's what it is. I'm not saying you're wrong, but it's only theory and nothing to live by.

If I hit my legs hard they may not recover in 48 hours...heck, it may be a week before I'm gonna hit'em again. Everyone is different and recovers at different rates. Many elite athletes hit the same muscle twice in a day...I mean I could go on with data that supports either side, but at the end of the day you want to train often...and train fresh!

Hope that helps -

You can do pushes up daily, however it's always good to give your muscles a rest.

Mix up your push ups too. Don't do the same, standard push ups each day. There are vairous ways to do push ups, perhaps have your feel elevated, make a triangle with your hands, use only one leg, etc.

Here is a post of mine you may find useful on various push ups...
