Questions about a routine...

hey I'm new here and I just had some questions about my workout and what it will do for me and whether i should change it....

so ive always been active, playing hockey and baseball and sometimes running outside but now ive just started to workout formally

my routine i have been doing lately is:

a warmup for about 10 minutes
a half hour run on the treadmill at 5 mph
a half hour of various weight lifting in the weight room

so im 17 , about 5'11'' and i weigh about 170...i really just want to lose a little weight and gain some muscle...any suggestions or changes i should make?

I don't think the treadmill is very good since it can cause injuries.
"a half hour of various weight lifting in the weight room"..your going to have to go into details.

why are there so many treadmills around and so many people do them if they cause injuries?

and by various weight lifting...what should i do?

right now im just doing the machine with the counterweight and you pull yourself up, the leg press and some free weights..

About injuries and treadmills, I've heard people say that when they use the treadmills at particular gyms, they get new or aggravate existing injuries, but they can use treadmills in other particular gyms without incident. Which suggests to me something about cushioning and impact absorption, quality of the machine itself.

I've had a similar experience: I tore a calf muscle several years ago and it's one of those injuries that never quite healed right--there are certain activities that aggravate it to the point where it feels like it's going to go again so I have to mind that. I can walk forever outdoors and I can run outdoors or on a treadmill. I can do the elliptical and stairmaster for hours. But if I walk--plain old walk--at a fast pace and a slight incline on one of the treadmills at my gym, that calf injury will threaten again. It's so odd.

I could never train for a marathon on a treadmill--I just never get an effective (or equivalent) workout on them. Also to me, treadmill running is not a replacement for road or track running. A similar thing is true (for me) with stairmasters: they're not replacements for climbing stairs. Each one (running on the road/track v. treadmill use / climbing stairs v stairmaster use) is a separate workout unto itself. At least it feels that way for me.

replying to the first guy...ya i would run outside and i plan to but thats not going to happen until maybe next month because of the snow and ice we have covering everywhere where i live...

replying to the second guy...is it really better to do cardio after weights?

i heard it was good to do cardio then weights because the muscles grow better when the last thing you do is work them (or something like that)

anyways thanks...

To the guy who posted the questions lol
Its best to do cardio after weights, mainly because cardo, when done right, expends quite a large amount of energy, and if you do not have the energy to exhaust your muscles through Resistance training you will not see the gains you want.

As for injury's on a treadmill, the only way that would happen is if you were not paying attention. Yeah some treadmills have no padding but its no different then going out on pavement and running like most joggers.

If you want to get big, stop playing on the machines and start hitting dumbbells/barbells.

Also, you want to loose weight and gain muscle.
You can't do both at the same time, decide if you want to loose weight and then add it, or if you want to gain weight (muscle) now and want to loose it later.

Post in the nutritional section accordingly and we'll help you out, nutrition really is key here :)

ok...so i would focus on cardio stuff for a long time (or as long as it takes to get to where i want to be) and then, focus on weight training?
