Questions about a new mountain bike I might buy

I am looking at a Trek Marlin 29er. Does anyone have any input on that bike or maybe another 29 inch bike I should look at. I will use it daily to ride to work and weekends when I have the time. The on road conditions in the area I will ride are sometimes rougher than off road conditions. Even though I enjoy riding and have been doing it for a while I am not well versed on the terminology. So please break down any advice to the idiot level so I can understand it. Oh yeah, before I tell you how much the shop wants for the bike what should I pay for this Trek?

Have you looked at cyclocross bikes instead of Mt Bikes? They are quite trail worthy but will be much better on the road. Trek makes decent bikes but are overpriced for the compnents they use. I would search . For the same price you'd pay for the Trek you could get a bike with much better components, and that's what counts.

You're welcome. I ordered this one:

$500 bucks, but the components are worthy of a $1000+ bike. My son is BIG into cycling and he was very impressed with the quality/value ratio. Took me about 35 minutes to assemble it, and I haven't built a bike in 30 years. :)

They sell all types of bikes, Mt Bikes, Road Bikes, Cafe Bikes, Hybrids....

That is nice. I just got back from the bike shop to see what they would give in trade for mine. guess what, they are out of the Trek I was looking at. Not only that but Trek is out of them as well.

It looks like I am going with a bike from bikes direct instead. The prices are much better and they are in stock.
