So I've just been wondering what's the difference between getting a lap band surgery and eating low calories? I mean, all that surgery does is make your stomach smaller so you'll eat less. Can a person do that on their own?

I know that a person should eat their recommended calories for a day, but I see so much debate when someone is on a very low calorie diet, but little debate when someone eats less cuz their stomach is small.

Couldn't I just lower my calories instead of getting a lap band? If being full is the problem, couldn't I just eat really leafy greens and lots of beans to feel full?

I don't really plan on lowering my calories really low OR getting a lap band, FYI. I'm just curious at the difference.

Or you could just do a reasonable calorie cut to lose weight slowly thus increasing your chance to keep it off.

Surgery is a last resort.
Low calorie diets are a last resort that should only be done with doctor care.

Come on, just lose it the smart way.

With comparing the two, yes you can do the same by just eating low calories but the surgery makes it so that you couldn't eat anymore than what's allowed even if you wanted to because your stomach is so small. So, for those who don't have the ability to control how much they eat, surgery is usually their last resort.

But, yes, you can accomplish the same result by eating a low calorie diet, but this is not the healthiest way to go about that in the least. It's not a black or white, all or nothing issue. A diet somewhere in between would work wonders and accomplish wonderful results without depriving the body of what it needs. The best way to lose weight is to eat a variety of natural foods in a moderate caloric intake which is less than your daily calorie burn. IMO, no food group or one type of macronutrient should be left out, but rather eating from all the food groups and just watching your overall caloric intake for the day.
