Question on Abs/Gaining

I'm bulking right now, and had been reading about ab
workouts and how usually it is how you eat that gets
you abs.

What I really need to ask is... Am I wasting my time
doing ab workouts while putting on a little extra weight
around my stomach, or will I see the results reflected
whenever I go into a cutting phase of my body?

Seriously? I need to know out of my own ignorance!

I'd really like a straight-up answer to this question. Since I'm no heath/fitness guru... I feel left in the dark on certain matters. Any input would be great.
