Question about Treadmill Speeds

Hey all.

Recently I purchased a treadmill. Now on mine I believe it does 0-10km/h. Which is 0-6.21 mp/h. Is that right? I use it atm at about 7 km/h MAX, and that's very fast walking/slight jog. But I see people saying they're walking at like 5mph which is about 8 km/h? These are people on here. (i.e Losing weight) I can't imagine using it at 10 km/h but it'd be seriously fast I think.

So what's the deal? Are other people doing km/h not mp/h and just confusing it? Just doesn't make sense to me.

Also, atm it's on max tilt/inversion what ever you call it, would that make it harder for jogging? As I find it awkward to jog on atm, would making it at a lower or flat tilt/invert help?

AND, is it necessary to let go of the arm holder things on the side for a proper workout? Or is it ok to hold onto them as you walk/run?

the treadmill I use at my gym - I will walk on at a speed of about 4.0 - 4.4 mph - I have relatively short legs for my height, so it's a fairly quick pace... and I do use an incline to make it more challenging (plus I read somewhere that it helps work the muscles in the butt more but that could be false) I rarely keep it at aconsistent speed but will bump up the speed for song lengths then slow down for a song - (note i can't come close to those speeds when I'm walking outside)

I would imagine that walking at 5mph was possible, if someone was really working but i've also seen that be a slow jog for people at my gym...


You shouldn't be holding onto the side holders, and if you are, the suggestion Ive seen is you're going to fast and slow it down and go at aspeed you don't need to hold on and progress up from there.
 
See I've seen so many people say that they're walking at 4 mph...but I'm practically running anyways trying to keep up with 4 mph. So now I'm just jogging at 4.5 mph, I honestly think that trying to walk it would be harder. I do not see how someone can walk at 5 mph, but then I am 5'4.
 
Athletes who do walking races can go along at 9mph and more. Not that it looks much like the sort of walking that you or I would do, but there we are.

It really has a lot to do with how long your legs are - Im only 5'9 and don't have long legs and really don't walk all that fast - but when I do training walks with people who are shorter than I am - I do have to slow down.
 
Well i'm 5'11, and I'm sure my legs are normal length for my height if not longer.
Also is it almost VITAL to have running shoes of some sort when jogging/running on treadmill, as atm I'm trying to do it barefoot and find it weird/uncomfortable and hard lol.

I'm 5'9, and I can walk at 4mph, but between 4 and 5 I have to start picking up my feet and jogging. I guess 5mph isn't too big of a stretch but I personally feel uncomfortable walking it. Plus I really only walk doing my warm up and cool down otherwise I'm at a mild jog or doing intervals.

Also I forgot to ask, are trainers/ running shoes nescessary? As I find it uncomfortable to try and jog atm and I figured it maybe because i'm trying to do it in socks. :rolleyes:

Well specific shoes will help quite a bit and running shoes will be more supportive of the movements such as running and jogging more so then the very generalized cross training shoe. Anything is better than a pair of sneakers. I got a $20 pair of cross trainers on clearance sale, and I've grown to like jogging and running so much that I might just take the dive and get a good $100 pair of running shoes. You might want to bump up to the Harsh Truth forum and get some brand and model recommendations.

As far as socks go, I don't know if any running shoe is designed to go barefoot, but I could be ignorant to that.
 
good question i dunno, but Harsh truth may have a good answer for you. I just know when i work out as far as running or walking i have to wear double socks, or i'll have blisters no matter what shoes i wear. I wear Kswis or whatever, i dunno if they are running shoes, they feel great to me.
