Weight-Loss Question about starvation mode

Weight-Loss
I am 20 years old, 225 pounds, 6'4", 20.45% body fat(46 pounds fat)

According to my BMR(through online calculators) times my average activity(6 days a week hard cardio/light lifting) my body is burning 3600-3900 calories a day. I give a range because different calculators say different things.

I am on a meal plan that has me eating anywhere between 1850-2250 calories a day, it depends on whether I lift or not because I add a protein shake in.

According to my BMR I am creating a 1350-2050 calorie deficit depending on the calculator and the days meals. I know that the suggested deficit is 1000.

My question is, I know I am creating a MASSIVE deficit but I dont seem to be hungry... ever, is it possible that I am putting myself into starvation mode without feeling the side effect of hunger pains?

Also to add, I have been on this diet for almost 3 weeks now and have had HUGE improvements in my reflection in the mirror and lost about 3 inches on my waist. The scale keeps messing with me but I dont trust it one bit.

Unless you're doing a lot of calorically expensive exercise, that range seems a bit high. Your maintenance is more than likely someplace between 3100-3600.

Which would mean your deficit isn't as large as you note below.

I don't see much wrong with that intake given your weight. Just realize the more aggressive you are with dieting, the more likely it is you'll lose muscle.

Adequate protein and proper lifting is huge in terms of maintaining as much muscle mass as possible while dieting... especially when dieting strictly.

Adequate protein would more than likely fall in the ballpark of 1-1.5 grams per pound of lean body mass.

According to my BMR I am creating a 1350-2050 calorie deficit depending on the calculator and the days meals. I know that the suggested deficit is 1000.

Suggested?

There's no deficit that is or should be blanketly applied to all populations.

Generally fatter people can tolerate a greater deficit without negative consequences compared to leaner individuals.

My question is, I know I am creating a MASSIVE deficit but I dont seem to be hungry... ever, is it possible that I am putting myself into starvation mode without feeling the side effect of hunger pains?

Whenever you diet, you're in "starvation mode." Regardless of the size of the deficit, your body is going to adjust in response to the stress imposed by insufficient calorie intake.

The less fat you have to lose and/or the more strictly you diet, the faster said adaptations will take place.

You might want to check your definition of starvation mode. I've talked about it a ton on this forum. Just do a search for posts made by me that contain the words "starvation mode."

Also to add, I have been on this diet for almost 3 weeks now and have had HUGE improvements in my reflection in the mirror and lost about 3 inches on my waist. The scale keeps messing with me but I dont trust it one bit.

Good job!

Thank you a TON for the detailed response Steve!

My definition of starvation mode is basically my metabolism slowing down to a crawl as a result of lack of calories. But it seems like im on the right track so ill keep on keeping on and see how it goes.

Thank you again :-D

You're quite welcome. Here's an article recently written by a friend of mine, Tom Venuto. I posted it elsewhere on the net but it would certainly be beneficial to you in terms of having a better understanding of "starvation mode."

No problem, glad you enjoyed it.
