Sport Question about sodium

Sport Fitness
Essentially my question is, is Sodium -that- bad for a active healthy person? I often times put salt on my food, and eat canned veggie/beef soups that are typically going to be high in sodium but a decent source of protein and low in fat.
I have heard that sodium really isn't that bad for active individuals as it helps them sweat during activities. I don't know the validity to that. Obviously it's bad for people with blood pressure problems or like diabetics ect.

Also, I find myself putting salt on my veggies such as corn and green beans ect., which I would *assume* is a much healthier alternative then putting on butter and things like that. So, with that said, is an abundance (not to an extreme just moderate) of sodium going to be a real determent to my nutrition?

depends how much of it you eat. USually, though, salting your food isn't that bad as long as you don't have blood pressure problems or anything like that.

as much cardio as you do, you should be having a bit of sodium... and calcium, and magnesium.

when I run for distance take sodium after one hour. And I take it a grahm at a time, provided /i will be continuing for another hour.

p.s. it does not make you sweat more, it makes you sweat moreefficiently. sweat is really your body running thru hydration in search of electrolytes.

electrolytes being sodium, magnesium, and calcium.

when I learned abotu electrolyte balancin I became a much better athlete.

here's an interesting number for you....

during my Ironman I took 10 grahms of sodium- that is 10,000 miligrahms.

And that does not include all the sodium I had in the 14,000 calories I consumed.

the sodium scare was based on a fat and lazy taste bud feeding 70's generation.

your fine

Haha wow, that's a lot of sodium and a lot of calories, but I'm sure Ironman's are so physically draining and deplete a lot of what you take in during meals. I figured, as Karky said, it would only be an issue if you have blood pressure issues ect.

Awesome :) ha. thanks guys.
