OK everyone knows that whole grain brown rice is better for you right? My question is. Why? I looked on the package last night of some brown rice and some instant white rice. The brown rice does have a few more calories but other than that the white rice actually looks more nutritious.

the brown rice has 2 grams of fiber, vs 1 gram in the white rice it also has a bit more protein

I'm not totally sure whether Uncle Bens qualifies as a whole food - but brown rice being a whole grain carb will take longer to digest than white rice will...

You've also got potassium in the brown rice... while potassium isn't a nutrient that's required to be posted - it's a nutrient that helps with blood pressure and getting it is a good thing

The Difference Between Brown Rice and White Rice
Brown rice is simply white rice that has not had the bran covering the rice grains removed. Removing the bran is done so that the rice is fluffier and cooks faster. Since brown rice still has the bran intact, it is a much better source of fiber. In fact a cup of brown rice has three and one-half grams of fiber while white rice has less than one gram of fiber. We all need from 15 to 25 grams of fiber in our diet every day.
Another benefit from eating brown rice is caused by the fiber slowing down the absorption of carbohydrates. This will help tame the blood-sugar roller coaster that can happen from a high sugar-low fiber meal. Fiber also has a healthy effect on our cholesterol levels and may help to reduce this risk of cardiovascular disease.

Besides the fiber found in the brown rice, the bran contains nutrients like magnesium, manganese, and zinc. White rice has reduced levels of these nutrients, but is often fortified with iron, and some B vitamins.

I also found this is you wanted to see the difference between raw and regular rices:

Instant Rice - Pros

Super fast! Especially for recipes that call for already cooked rice such as Fried Rice
Super fast! Does not create lots of steam (heat) in the kitchen during the hot summer
Easy measuring portions, 1 for 1 liquid to rice, you can use anything to measure
Instant Rice - Cons

Expensive! $4 for a medium sized box? That's like 20 lbs. of jasmine rice!
Taste, which is not as full bodied and complex as regular rice
Slight nutritional difference. According to , the caloric makeup of prepared instant rice is 89% carb, 4% fat, and 7% protein. Regular rice is slightly better use of your calories, 90% carb, 2% fat, and 8% protein. Very minor indeed, but it is a difference for careful dieters to consider.
Regular Rice - Pros

Better, more full-bodied flavor
Reheats better than instant rice in the microwave
The rice cooker is more "fix it and forget it" without any timing, unlike instant
Cheap! 25 lbs. for $6!!!! We can have a bowl of steamed rice with dinner each evening for months on that much rice.
Rice cooker rice stays hot for several hours. I prepared instant rice and left it covered with foil on the stove and it was cold within 20 minutes when the rest of dinner was done.
Regular Rice- Cons

Time. Takes at least 20 minutes to finish cooking, and then needs more time to rest for fluffy rice.
Lack of variety, throwing other ingredients in with rice in the rice cooker is difficult. If they settle to the bottom they will burn.
Measuring, each rice cooker has a specific measuring cup that goes with it. The water fill-lines inside the cooker only work with the scoop sizes from that specific cup. Mine has an odd sized one that is less than half a cup but more than a third a cup.

Wow lots of rice info. Thanks a lot. I knew there had to be some reason. I prefer the brown rice anyway but the 30 minutes to make it is a drag sometimes.

Whole Foods and a few other places as well - sells in their frozen department - precooked brown/white and wild rice that you just have to microwave to warm up..

or you can cook yourself a double batch and then stick it i the freezer... and have it ready for the enxt time youo want it

The white rice appears to have more vitamins because vitamins are added in after the fact. It is somewhat debatable, but I prefer natural vitamins. So that right there is a plus.

Also, brown rice is a complex carb. I cut all refined sugar a while back, and now when I am obliged to eat white rice, it is similar to the feeling I remember eating candy. It just feels like it is going to my blood and I want to gorge.

Also, people will say you need x amount of fiber. This is good, but I will argue this:

You can't get too much fiber, ok you just can't! Look at every health study and you will see that stuff that gives you fiber=healthy, and stuff that cuts fiber out = unhealthy

It is just how it is. So eat the high fiber stuff and don't worry about the 30 calories per cup or whatever. ;)
