Question about MHR...

In time (over months and years) when you do cardio, and in return your heart builds strength and endurance, does your MHR go up or down? I know that your RHR would go lower because a stronger heart can pump more blood in less beats.

It's just a question I've been curious about.

Thanks

I don't recall ever reading anything definitive about mhr and fitness. There is clear evidence is does drop with age but I have heard of fit people hitting 240 and out-of-shape overweight people hitting 240 as well. I think mhr is determined genetically.

As a general rule, maxium heart rate is 220 minus your age. This is REALLY generic. A really fit athlete will have a higher maximum heart rate and I would imagine that as you become more fit, your heart rate would go up. But your age would bring it down so maybe it might stay the same for awhile until you reach your maximum level of fitness. Totally guessing here though.

I hate to hijack a thread, but I have a question related to the OP. The old Max HR method of 220-age puts me at 195. I've recently bought a heart monitor for when I run, and it usually has me at 190-195 for a good portion of the time that I exercise (this is usually just jogging). Is this normal or something I should have looked at?

Thanks tsilcyc and g8r80's g8r80,

I've been noticing my MHR dropping as my RHR was dropping. What's nice is that my heart rate is now lower at any time during the day by about 10 beats.

Marble,

Feel free to hijack away! I hope with this bump your question will be answered.

As TSI mentioned, 220-age may have significantly underestimated your mhr. Although it is probably nothing to worry about, the safe answer is to clear this with a cardiologist. What is your age and gender? Are you physically fit?

A 25yo should not have a heart rate of 195 while jogging. Lots of factors to consider. Are you overweight? Out of shape? If these are not factors, I'd go to a doctor. Better to be safe.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not that far out of shape, I don't think: 5'10, 185lbs and male. I was very physically active about 5 years ago, then I obtained my current job and basically did no exercise since then up until now (I decided to take up running and weightlifting for my health).

P.S. Thanks for the bump, simpleblue ^_^

This is one of those things where you just don't want to mess around. Better to have it checked out.
