Question about exercise bikes

About a year ago I bought an exercise bike, it was reasonably cheap and small enough to fit into my tiny flat. Sadly I'm not very good at keeping at it, but I'm trying.

Recently my boyfriend mentioned that using a bike like that probably doesn't count as 'exercise' and it wouldn't help me shift any weight no matter how much I use it. I personally don't agree (not to mention it wasn't an entirely supportive comment!). I feel pretty puffed out after using it and, quite frankly, it's better than sitting on my backside doing nothing (I live alone with my son so I don't get the opportunity to go to the gym AT ALL!) I

Is there any truth in what he said about exercise bikes. Are cheap bikes completely useless for expending enough energy to result in weight loss?
(FYI, I know that it was cheap for a reason...I figured because it wasn't high-tech and didn't have any fancy settings or equipment etc...so I know that more expensive would be 'better' but I can't afford that! Also, I do own some fitness DVD's and I try to alternate using those and the bike. I also know everyone is different and everyone will have differing expereinces with bikes but I want to know how much truth was in my boyfriend's comment).

Anything is considered an exercise if you're moving. For shifting weight, it won't make a difference if your diet is not on check. I like to believe the purpose of exercising is for cardiovascular health and dieting for weight management. Shifting your weight is as simple as eating less amount of calories than you're suppose to.

Like BeHappy said - All moving is good moving! Combine that with good eating and you are on your way to weight loss success!
I started with walking, now I am getting back into running. Your exercise doesn't have to be expensive, it just has to be something that you like and will keep doing.

Thank you :) I'm controlling my diet too so the exercise is intended as an accompaniment to that, as well as the benefit of getting fitter. I feel better knowing I'm not doing it for nothing!

You can lose fat at a high rate if you use the bike correctly. Interval training 3x/week for 20-30 min will give you good results.
