Question about Eliptical Machines

Hello there, I was hoping someone could answer a question about elliptical machines.

While training on an elliptical machine at my Gym I train on the Pre-cor, Life Fitness and True machines, all of them say that after a high intensity hour on them Ive burned about 1500 calories. I know that they say that on an elliptical machine you burn more calories although it doesnt feel like it. When I run for an hour it seems like I burn about 1100 calories and it feels a lot harder. My question is how accurate are these eliptical machines? I just find it hard to believe I am burning that many calories in an hour but all three brands of elipticals seem to provide similar results. Any insights?

Thank you

I have a LifeFitness elliptical which I use every day. On a high intensity day, the LF will say I have burned about 1100/hr. My heart rate monitor says somewhere between 800-1000. I have heard that you can discount the machine reading by about 20%. Over the last two years, that seems to be about what my LF reading is over the heart rate monitor. I purchased my first elliptical in 1998 and have been using one ever since.

Yeah im kind of guessing that those must be reading high. I try to target about burning 1500 calories a session on the Elliptical, which must mean more realistically about 1100. The thing I dont get is how all three Elliptical machines buffer calorie burning by that amount. Maybe if the manufacturers had more accurate calorie counters than thier sales would suffer because customers might not feel like they are getting as much of a workout on that particular machine. Perhaps I should just use a Body Bugg or something.

I use a brand called Infinity and workout an hour every two days in high intensity but it tells me that I burn 320 calories.
I used to workout at the gym on the elliptical and the machines tells me that I burned 700 calories (medium intensity).

Is the brand not good? As I know, I should be burning 1000 and above. Please someone advise.

Believe me, how am I feeling after the workout is just feels like sleeping! I sweat like crazy and feel so tired!!

So, as an accurate number, which is the best calorie burning per hour for an elliptical trainer?

thanks,
suzan
