Q?-Strength training and burning fat??

Hey all--new to the site. Hoping for some advice. I've been doing a fat-burning, total body, circuit weight training routine for the past six weeks. Along with good nutrition, I'm down 16 lbs.
My question is this--I'd like to start a strength training routine to get stronger for my job and sports. (hockey) However, I'm wondering if strength training is good for burning fat also? I know there are longer rest periods. My fat burning routine had no rest periods. Thanks in advance for any insight.

there are studies being done on the calorie burning effects between cardio and strength training. while cardio burns more NOW, strength training burns them over time as your muscles recover. Also keep in mind that the more muscles you have, the greater fat burning potential you have.

hope this helps

It's better than good, in my opinion. If you had to choose between A) an activity that maintained or potentially even built your muscles, thus maintaining or improving your metabolism, and B) and activity that helped you lose weight right now, but was ineffecient for sparing muscle mass and would thus allow your metabolism to diminish; which would you choose? It's clear to me that strength training is very important if you want to lose FAT. Metabolic conditioning will assist by helping you burn off some extra calories, but it should come secondary to strength training for fat loss goals. While doing strength training, you might not lose weight as quickly (although this is ultimately dependent on diet), but you will be able to lose it much more consistently in the longterm as you won't have to keep adjusting your diet to make up for a reduced metabolic need. Note that you also need to be consuming plenty of protein while in a caloric deficit for this to be the case.

Agree with the above

to lose fat is to gain muscle.. so.. go heavy.. 5x5 for them compound work outs.. and make sure you've got good form and good nutrition. eat your damn chicken!
