Sport Q: Healthy Foods that promote Alertness

Sport Fitness
I've noticed that when I'm working at my desk, around 10 a.m., I get hungry and quite lethargic. (I usually wake up between 4:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., depending on if I'm working out or not.)

After I have my first meal around 5:00 a.m., which is usually oatmeal or some fibre-rich cereal, what do you recommend for a 'mini-meal' or 'healthy snack' that could up my alertness?

Do protein-rich foods provide more of a wake-up than carbohydrate-rich foods? Would a slice of toast with some low fat peanut butter be a healthy snack? (It's usually what's readily available, unless I go out to the store mid-morning, so that's why I'm asking.)

I've read that apple's are good, and are better at waking you up than coffee.
