Pushups to keep fit

The summer of 2009 was really a great one for me. :sport: The best one sofar. Among other things I traveled to work and back 4 kilometers each way by bike (I worked at the seaside, so we're not talking flat ground) and got a chance to swim a lot (talking real swimming ). Those two things got me in an amazing shape.

Now I'm interested if I kept biking and started doing pushups for the upper body ( instead of swimming ), e.g. every day, would I manage to preserve my form? I'm not interested in bodybuilding but endurance and the feeling of power :animal3:.

Thank you for your time.

Absolutely. One thing I would strongly suggest is to also do pullups. Pushups will work your chest, shoulders, and triceps. Pullups will work your back, biceps, and forearms. I think those two exercises together make a decent, albeit simple, upper body workout.

And, if you're biking up some hills, that'll hit the lower body plenty.

Thank you both very much. And they're all free. :D

EDIT: Should I do them everyday, or is this program fine to follow? Would everyday lead to overtraining?

If there were only one exercise I were able to do, sayin I had no weights or bench press or nothin, it would be the ever faithful pushup ! Every 4th week of the month instead of weights I do full body calesthetic workouts and pushups are a big part of it. Ya cant go wrong with them.

simple yet oh so effective, we also use them in rugby, so if someone drops the ball then we all have to do ten, and i tell you some days when its raining we do 100+ pushups
