Push ups vs Bench Press

What are the perks of both? I know i do both but i see more results out of push ups. Maybe because i have been benching longer...... I feel the burn not only in my chest but in my triceps and shoulders doing pushups so they feel more beneficial but bench press gets me more 1R power for sure. Just wondering what any of you do and how it works out for ya......

I train to gain mass so pushups arent really benefical to me. I bench because it is the only way that I can reall engage my larger chest muscle fibers.

You feel the pushups more because you can probably do more, for example I'm assuming you can do 25 or 30 easy. But put a weight that you can do 25-30 easy on a bench and you'll feel that same burn also because your body switches to endurance mode.

Now put weight on your back that you can only do 5 good pushups, and compare it to a 5rm max on the bench and it's comparable.

Also, pushups are almost always done with body weight obviously. I think if you warm-up well enough on the bench, you'll feel it and get that burn like you do with pushups.

If you can get a weight vest, or use rubber tubing, mini-bands or such, push-ups are not a waste of time. But you definately need to add resistance.

Google "Chad Waterbury Pushing Up Your Explosive Strength" to learn how push-ups can help you gain size and strength as part of a total program ;)

no such thing as "tone" :p
if your weak and cant do many pushups, then id say work up good pushup strenght before you near a bench, pushup also uses more core for stabalizing, since its using the "plank" position during the entire exersice..

Pushups are good for the same reason as squats or pullups. Its because you "move your body through space". You use a lot more muscles doing them versus doing dumbell bench press. That's why they are great and should still be done, even when you are trying to bulk.

I do agree, however, that you should add some resistance if you can. Don't overdo it though. Pushups are a great natural movement, and stacking weights on your back will mess up your form and probably hurt your shoulderblades. It hurt mine...

Dont just drop them out of your routine though. Better comparison is it's like doing 30-35 dips. You may do a lot of reps, but NO ONE would tell you to stop doing dips now would they.

But dips are much more difficult than pushups.
I agree, but I compared them because they are both very basic high rep movements. I still do pushups on a daily basis between sets of whatever because it's still a total upper body movement and it keeps me lose. No one can argue against a good old fashioned pushup IMO

correct. I think pushups are more for endurance building and bench for size

Pushups I'd say are a little more adaptable. You can spread your arms out and work a different part of your shoulders and your pecs, or you can center them and work a different part of your shoulders and focus on the triceps. But I mostly like bench because you can really build up weight doing that.

usually when you look at someone and they look jacked they can do a lot of push ups but when you look at someone you have no clue how much they bench. I think push ups perk your pecs out a lot more imo but that's just what i noticed on myself. I can bench press 260 pounds but i didn't get that great definition until i started back on push ups.

Pushups are good for stabilizing your chest and increasing strength. IF you want to add more strength then endurance then do pushups real slow. Lower and higher your self slowly and you will feel the burn!

I heard that pushups is like benching half your bodyweight, but I can't confirm that.

you could do "clap pushups" push so explosive that you can clap your hands on top and then lower..

He or she should start with simple one clap push-ups. The double are extreme and the only one I've seen do them is Ross.

who said anything about doubble? :p i think i was a bit unclear. i mean push urself up so fast that you can clap, then put your hands back on the floor and lower the body so the starting position again ;)

i tried to clap behind my back once.. hurt my chin:p

Ross is amazing. He does a triple clap PU. Front back front.

PUs are great and don't forget theat you can vary the exercise. A one arm dive bomber takes tremndous srtength. You can always try to do this too

View attachment 724 These are brutally hard, of course you don't have to do them on fingertips.

There are so many variations of PU, don't just do military.
