punching bags

What do punching bags help do for your body. does it shape your arms. ( get rid of fat ) . fat loss in body? if you punch and kick it. and what good is jumproping.

Punch / kick the punching bags.
situps
pushups
jumprope
jog / run ( maybe )

is that good?
 
Look at the physiques of boxers and kickboxers for your answer.Heavy bag work can be as intense as you want it to be, but because it is generally done in rounds of 2-3 minutes at a fast pace, it is anaerobic in nature (for the most part).This means that it is good for conditioning your cardiovascular system but also has the potential to build muscle as well.
 
Heavy bags rock! I use one and it is great for all sort of things - coordination, cardio, getting out aggression... and more.

If you want a good cardio session - full a 20 min. HIIT on your heavy bag... GOOD LUCK!

There are all sorts of solutions for hanging a bag and I prefer hangers to standups anyday.
 
but then im not sure if i have anywhere to hang it. so is a standing up one okay? is it the same as the hanging. whats differences and benefits :D. is it still hard to make the pad move when you hit it
 
those cost like. 150 ( speed bag + punching bag stand ) . and um. 100 around for a glove and 80 lb bag . 15 dolalrs cheaper for a 40 lb bag. anybody know how much a punching bag stand costs? no speed bag .. thanks
 
um not sure try google, or a local fitness store website.

$100 for a glove what it does it have rhine stones?!!?! for a cardio only work out with a punching bag you dont need $100 gloves, something closer to 20 to 40 would be adequate

Heavy bag platforms are okay if you can find one that is designed properly.I bought one for about $100 at the local MC Sporting Goods, and while it worked fine for the time period when I couldn't hang a bag, there were a few problems with it.The way most are designed is that the supports run along the floor in a V-shaped pattern away from the bag.This prevents lateral movement for the most part so you become accustomed to standing in one place while punching.This is fine if your goals are general fitness, but if you are training for boxing, I don't think it is a good idea.

Same thing with the freestanding bags.The bag doesn't move (unlike a hanging bag) so you are not able to test your timing or work on closing the gap effectively.But again, if you are just after general fitness, then the freestanding bag is fine.
 
umm question about what ballast said...
so if i get a bag stand + a heavy bag hanging. ( i want to learn fighting ) or how to throw some punches. it wouldnt help me? or would it? benefits of heavy bag stuff :]

In order of effectiveness as it translates to fighting ability, freestanding bags are least effective, hanging bag from platform are next (unless it is constructed so that your lateral movement is not limited), and bags suspended from the ceiling are best.The ceiling suspended bag is best IMO because it moves around, so you must perfect your timing, and you are free to move 360 degrees around it without obstructions.This emphasizes footwork.
 
but do you thnk a hanging stand would do? hanging bag. just to make your punches accurate and a little more power and what other exercises would go with it( not weights ).. pushups / situps / pull ups / jogging / jumpropes?

No matter what I do its like I cant gain any chest muscle.I just have fat hanging down.

It should be fine.Just try to integrate as much footwork in as possible.

You can do all the exercises you mentioned.Maybe set up a circuit and go through it a few times either before or after your bag work.
 
what would you reccomend for the weight of the bag for a 5' 8'' 150 lbs person. physically.. decent shape. not a huge gut + muscle that is visible
 
I like 100 pound bags.The 70 pounders are ok, but once you learn how to punch correctly, you are going to have that thing flying all over the place.For longer combinations and things like punch-out drills, I think 100-pound bags are the best.Undefeated heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano use to work out on a homemade 300-pound punching bag.Talk about hard to move!He must have hit like a truck.
