Punching Bag

I'm looking to get a punching bag for my home. I can mount it in the ceiling, so mounting isn't a problem... I'm just curious what weight people usually get. I'm looking for something that isn't going to move around a whole lot when I hit it, but at the same time give me a good strength and cardio workout.

Any suggestions on brand, weight and type?

Thanks.

As a boxer Who works on bags every day i must warn you not to go out and get a "heavy" bag. I know far to many people who have broken then wrist and or hand swinging in awful form. Get some REAL gloves and start out with a Water bag. This will allow you to adjust how heavy the bag is and will absorb the impact better. learn how to hit (99.9% of people i see have little to no idea how to hit).
For the record I always suggest Water bags for beginners.

Quick tip
Never hit the bag dead on when it is swaying back to you. unlike a person a 100 pound bag with momentum behind it will not give;). When swaying back to you, use the chance to work on your foot work by sliding out of the way and hit it in its side (the ribcage)

Thanks for the info. When you say REAL gloves? What kind do you mean, I've seen that there are the full size gloves and then the training gloves... Also, I called one of the local sport shops and they don't have the water filled bags... Is there a good place online to buy these and if so, does the shipping kill the deal?

If I were to get a non-water heavy bag, what weight would be preferable?

Thanks.

If you are unable to attain a water punch bag then i would suggest you start out with a pair of standard Bag Gloves(basically boxing gloves just a tad better designed for hitting a bag). As for the bag i would suggest a standard hanging (leather if possible) 70 pounder (the 40 pounders tend to sway a tad to much).

I have never gone online to buy a bag or gloves so i can not suggest any place. Academy is the store i always buy from locally though. Their site might be worth a visit.

Punch Bag

I would go for the Tethered P.U Punchbag from Yorkfitness.
These bad boys have straps on the bottom and keep from swinging about all over the place.

I'm 5'7 170. I got in 60lbs. but it sways too much. 80lbs. would have been perfect.

Boxing Gloves have thick cushioning which can shift when you hit the bag and you can sprain your wrist. Bag gloves don't need padding at all really, they're supposed to keep you from tearing the skin on your knuckles.

Can a martail arts punching bag help for boxing? It's lighter( 40 ibs), but it's mounted from the ceiling and the floor. Would it absorb my punches better?
